Guide To Replacing Your Front Control Arm Rear Bushes

Recommended Posts

Are you doing this because the steering wobbles a bit when braking?

mine need doing i think

Yeah, that and the fact i get a knocking from the front end when i hit bumps in the road, was told at my last service they where both excessively worn and split. Hopefully this will cure both these issues, if not then i'll have to have the top mounts looked at (regarding the knocking).

I did notice a bit of oil on my driveway a few weeks before the service so it must have come from one of the bushes.

The garage are chatting out of their ringpieces.

All you need to do is remove the engine splashpanel (5mins), the aluminium brace (10-15 mins and some shuffling to be able to exert enough force to undo the bolts) and then two bolts per lollipop bush.

A hammer won't get them off. You need a puller, unless you want to get stuck in with a craft knife and all sorts else. WD40 may aid it sliding off.

Jack the car up from underneath the wishbone ball joint, and put axle stands under the jack points.

I made this mistake....a mistake that cost me 3 hours.

Lol.

That why man made tools - to make tasks easier. I always figure even if the cost of the tool ends up making the job the same price as the garage would charge (an hub pullers are cheap so not the case here)... It's completely worth it - you'll have the tools for life and there is always a next time. I love my tool collection :)

Has anyone fitted any of the bushes that come already fitted into the lollipops, there are plenty on e bay, this looks a lot easier route to take unless the e bay bushes aren't a lot of cop!

They will be fine mate. Saves time but you pay for it!

Are the eBay one's you've seen polybushes?

I fitted some of these ebay bushes to my 320d saloon last week - and the ride seems worse than it was with the old shot bushes.

I dont know if this is due to the bushes or because i didnt have a 4 wheel alignment done after fitting them.

Anyhoo, I spent tonite removing the old bushes and steel sleeves from the brackets removed from my car so that i can use these brackets to fit powerflex ones.

Good man, it'll be worth it.

New Poly's may make it seem a bit 'stiffer' as it tightens things up, but your car will be more planted and precise when turning, and follow the road a bit better.

It took some work to get the old bushes and steel sleeve separated from the brackets.

I now have the brackets cleaned up but there are slight marks on the inside from the hacksaw used to cut out the steel sleeve. Do these need to be smoothed out or left as is?

It'll be fine mate. once the polybush is in there, surface marks wont matter a jot.

Thanks Keith, my next job is getting the polybushes in the brackets - something i'm not looking forward to!!

Then the fitting - if the snow stays away hopefully it'll be fully completed this weekend ;)

Did this job on mine today, had a spare set of lollipops to fit polybushes in so didn't have to do it all in one go.

One tip I do have is when lining up the holes on the brackets when refitting, place a screwdriver through one of the holes on the bracket

and place it into the appropriate hole on the chassis rail. Use the screwdriver to lever the bracket and wishbone back into position - much easier than trying to man handle wishbone into place with your hands :)

Well, Top DIY Guide! B)

I did this DIY over the weekend and all I can say that this was my first mod.

Coming from a VW to BMW, the difference in the way they are built is amazing. To do the wishbone bushes on the Golf was a nightmare. But BMW thought everything through, really easy. My only grip was <_< this car is heavy to jack!

i had a slight vibration when braking lightly but not heavy, now a few weeks on if i just dab my brake pedal and keep the pedal pressed slightly just so ya not really braking its just touching, its really throwing the wteering wheel about now, i was told by bmw when in for an engine mount under warrantee that the 'eyelet' front bushes have slight play which are causing it and its not under warrantee so il have to pay and they want 300ish maybe abit more (cant remember exactly) basically though my question is....... are these 'eyelet' (said like ..... 'eye' - the thing you see out of... 'let' - as in a house to let) hope that explains how its said as im not too sure if 'eyelet' is the correct spelling. are these the same part that this DIY is for and is £50 per side and £50 fitting good? so £150 all in?

Hey Dan,

Don't listen to those monkeys! BMW wanted to charge me £600 to sort mine out. And I had the excat same problem as you. But its the Front Rear Control Bushes that have worn. I ordered up a new set from Phoneix Motorsport and they went straight in. Now the wobble has completely gone, but I now have a disc which has ever so slight wrap in. So new disc to order now.
