It has been know that the seal on the inlet manifold can go or the manifold can get cracked. However as said before I'd look at the hoses first as I think this is more than likely the problem if he can feel it in that area based on your above picture..... The rubber deteriorates over time due to the extreme heat under the bonnet, which cracks and eventually causes air leaks.

Well had the hose check and replace as MATTBMW suggested there was a split!! tonight the management light has come back on again even those it turned itself off for nearly 2 weeks!!

The AA just been out again and the fault again is same as before!

PO171 SYSTEM TOO LEAN

PO174 " " " " " " "

PO313 MISFIRE DETECTED WITH LOW FUEL

PO313 " " " " " " "

it cant be low fuel as the car still have a qaurter of a tank in! He suggust it maybe a failing fuel pump and advise to check fuel pump pressure... how can i check this? if its a garage will this be expensive?

fuel pumps are not too expensive from what I can remember but I'd try a couple of things first......

Quick question...have you recently taken you petrol level right down to the bare minimum of late or regularly?

Sometimes doing this cause the crap at the bottom of your tank to be put through the fuel prep system and clog up your fuel filter and injectors.....Suggest you get some STP, or Slick fuel system treatment in half a tank of petrol and go on a 45 min spirited drive (15-20mins warm up time).....using all the rev ranges in the gears and redline her a few times...........after this let her settle in idle for about 5 mins then turn off............let her cool for a while and change the fuel filter (not sure if you have done this already).....once do se how she drivers after....

It did go to ------ the other day, but i had put a full tank in after. I have ask the AA guy shall i use Redex and he said NO! And recommend not to put anything in the tank, accept for petrol!

Might try your idea Mattbmw.. where is the fuel filter? is it easy to exchnage yourself?

thanks and happy birthday Mattbmw :)

Thanks m8 ........Fuel filter is an easy job to do..not done it my self yet although I already pick up a filter from GSF for about £30.....Ther are plenty of DIY's about to change this.

Did the AA guy give and explanation as to why he did not recommend a fuel system cleaner?

well MR AA's response kinda surprises me really considering what you get in fuels like Vpower.....Vpower is higher octane rated fuel which also contains cleaning agents to help maintain optimal performance....plus if all additives were a load of tosh why would garages use things like cataclean.............if he was so good you would have thought he would have already diagnosed your cars problem....

Have you had a look at the CCVV return hose? This was giving me problems with engine management light a while back. I know you have different fault codes to what I had but I think it's worth a look as it's easy to do. See below where circled, it was split and sucking in air

Thats the air recirculation pipe from the CCVV...Will's problem seems to be fuel system related...although still good to check anyway..

Hope you had a nice Birthday.

The damn management light has come on again! and the car has a full tank of petrol! A friend of mine suggested that AA only clear the light and not the ecu, and thats why the light keeps coming on! The ecu needs to be reset, Can he be right? :D

I Guess your right tho Mattbmw... Because stp and redex wont be around so long if they didnt work!

That CCVV is under the engine cover? Is it hard to take the cover off?

I thought I would mention though due to the hissing sound Will and the AA guy heard.

It's easy enough to get the cover off, you have to remove the pollen filter and housing first though.

Thanks mate, the hissing was coming from a silicone pipe link to the throttle to the air filter.Which has been replaced 2 weeks ago had a huge split!!

Just went out for lunch and on way back the stupid light has gone off <_<

Have you got a link of how to remove the cover?

thanks

Both covers are held on by 2 bolts hidden under the removable caps...or do you mean the valve cover gasket?

its the cover to reveal the pipe rd83 suggested, so i guess its the main cover which says BMW. Althought the light off, i may as well check. <_<

thanks

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the forum, but in a weird way I'm pleased someone else is having the same problem as me. My service engine soon light has flicked on a couple of times too. I've had it reset twice now at a local specialist, however he hasnt been able to shed too much light on it other than both banks running lean and a valve in the fuel tank ??

Anyhow, i'll try and replace all the hoses mentioned and see how i get on.

does anyone have the part number for the hose under the engine cover between the inlet manifold and the head please?

mine is a 2002 330ci.

thanks

andrew

Welcome to the forum Andrew.....

If I were you m8...I'd try and clean the fuele system first with STP or Slick 50 or Redex.......plus a bit of spirited driving in the where appropriate red lining iff possible a few times.......Makes sure before you do this the car has been completely warmed up. After that I would allow the car to cool and the change the fuel filter which is an easy job.....these will set you back about £30 from either GSF, Eurocarparts or C3BMW.co.uk

I would not bother replacing the hose if it don't nee replacing as its very easy when trying to get those hoses of to break others...if your just want to check it then remove the cover....don't fix what ain't broke.

Hi Thanks for the reply.

I had the fuel system cleaned on an inspection 2 recently - Does anyone know if they change the fuel filter on an inspection 2?

fair point re the hose - it's just that I'm driving to the south of france on Saturday for my holiday and I can't stand driving a car with the mangement light on!! Really annoying!

I'll order the bits up from the main dealer and report back and see how I get on - however its weird that the light only comes on at motorway speed and when cruising (50-60mph both times - during an average speed check) - around town it was fine - however as soon as I hit a motorway... ping!

i'll go with the fuel filter first...

Thanks again.

p.s. - I've been floating around the BMW forum world for some time, my user names were on e30zone - andrewe30m3 (had a 3.5 E30 M3) and on e36coupe - andrew328iredsport - so Hi to everyone!

UPDATE - 27th July,

Ok, so I found a finger sized hole in the big rubber boot that fixes to the throttle body... cant remember what part, 3 or 6, but I'll order the correct one tomorrow!

I'm really pleased as this now makes a lot of sense, including the whistling sound I've been driving myself mad with for the last 2 months!!

cheers,

Andrew
