staddly
By now I think all BMW diesel engine owners should know about the issues of the intake system ad in particular EGR valves and Swirl flaps in the inlet manifold. If you have not, get yourself logged onto www.BMWland.co.uk and do a search - you need to know! I have a vehicle that is still under an extended BMw warranty so I do not propose to remove my swirl flaps. This is an informed decision based on the hours of reading I have done on the subject. Those without the benefit of warranty's should seriously consider carrying out the preventative 'mods' in realation to this issue. It is cheaper than a couple of splitters or M3 rep mirrors but will be of greater benefit in the long run. Anyway, some of you may know from another thread I recently found this product - Wynns EGR3 Cleaner @ £10.00 per can from your local autofactors. The instrcution say that it can be fed into a running engine to clean the entire intake system, EGR Valve, manifold the lot. Having read up on this and seen the various YouTube videos - I decided that in the first instance I would use it as a cleaner for a remeoved part, rather than spraying into the engine. Again, this was informed decision based on the fact that I did not want to ALL of the crap disloged to be sent through my exhaust system. I decided that I would give the offending items a good clean and then, if necessary, use the product to prevent further build up in the future, by using it as intended. So first thing was to remov ethe EGR valve to check the general condition. My car has covered just under 60,000 miles and I was expecting a decent build up of crud when I opened thing up - I was not dissapointed Remove the engine cover by releasing the front section securing pins (plastic ones above the grill) and then the 5 reatining allen key bolts on the top. (Pic 0)Undo the retaining clips securing the two pipes feeding into the egr valve. (Pic 1)Remove the small pipe connected to the vacum (Pic 1)Undo the 4 allen key bolts securing the EGR Valve to the manifold (Pic1) Pic 0 Pic 1 The extend of the build up can now be seen So to work - Applying the Wynns it was noticable that it was made for th job. It immediately went to work on the build up of carbon etc to the point where I only neede to lightly scrape away selected areas of excessive build ip in the corners! After about 20 min of agitation with a toothbrush and some gentle scraping, I would say half a cup full of crap was removed. Overall I am very pleased with the results and I suspect I would have been there a lot longer with a bowl of petrol and a screwdriver!! Manifold clean will follow later in Stage

Rob-
yeah bought a bypass kit off ebay, they only work on th m47 and m57, the later engined cars have egr sensors and you get a warning light on the dash when you fit the kit. bip78
Another good item to remove the crud of the EGR is caliper cleaner. It gets shot of all the carbon build up and cleans every noke n cranny. Has there been any evidence to the EGR bypass causing any issues with the Turbo? momo
Just got around to cleaning my EGR this morning.. Not as bas as some - but still not good! Before:- After:- TBH I think it may have been cleaned at some point before I got it as my car has done 97k now so I would've expected a LOT more than that.. Not too bad though! Had a quick look inside the inlet manifold - seems to be as full of crud as the inlet side of the EGR before I cleaned it! As you can see the EGR on an M57N is quite different to a 320d or an early 330d:- Only thing is, I couldn't move anything inside the EGR at all with my fingers or a scredriver.. I removed the inlet pipe a few weeks ago and had a look inside to see this:- TBH it doesn't look like its letting any exhaust gasses through? It seems at the same level as crud then as this morning when I cleaned it.. I wonder if its jammed closed so in effect its bypassed itself? lol. I can but wish.. bip78
I did my MAF and EGR on Sat just gone. My 330 is touching 40k - still very clean. After cleaned the both and reset the throttle sensor - FICK ME does it fly even more Alot smoother throw the gears along with a quiter engine. AdrianEvans
I cleaned my EGR valve this morning. It was cleaner than the OP but still pretty cruddy. I have been thinking a little though. The exhaust gasses come in from the small side tube with the main intake coming through the large port. Since the direction of gasses is always in one direction the buildup of crud should always been only on the manifold side of the valve. MOMO's valve above displays this perfectly. The oilier crud that goes throughout the main port is coming in from the intake - via the turbo.... So does the excess crud, throughout the entire valve, point to a worn turbo bearing? or is it a sign that oil is making ot past the crank case breather filter? or am I missing something else?
