Replacing Oem Badges With Cf Badges - Diy

Recommended Posts

Hi all, here's a quick how-to/photo guide to replacing BMW roundels from around the car.

Hope it helps/entertains. :(

With all the snow and ice outside, my plans to see the GF this evening were scuppered, so I decided to fit the carbon fiber badges I ordered from the US on eBay.

I ordered a 7-set of:

4x wheel centre caps

1x front roundel

1x rear roundel (facelift cabriolet)

1x steering wheel roundel

This came to a total of ~£48 from a US-seller called euro-body-kits and arrived two weeks later as explained. Well packaged, good communications and no problems, I'm happy to recommend the seller on here.

Steering Wheel Badge

This is the only part I'm not 100% about as it doesn't have the chrome ring around the roundel like the original.

img0430o.jpg

The badge was a simple sticker that goes over the top of the existing badge as per the below pic.

img0431v.jpg

Bonnet Roundel

This wasn't too tough - removing the original requires a bit of leverage at 12 and 6 o'clock on the roundel as the retaining pins are located at 3 and 9 o'clock.

img0432vq.jpg

A small flathead screwdriver, even wrapped in a microfibre cloth, is too risky and may cause leverage-bruises, let alone scratches...

...so a plastic Ikea fishslice works nicely.

img0433g.jpg

Do remember to still wrap up before you get in there though.

img0434q.jpg

The roundel will eventually pop off, leaving a dirty whole with two rubber grommets.

img0435n.jpg

img0437o.jpg

Give the hole a good clean.

img0438pd.jpg

NB, these may come out attached to the retaining pins on the back of the roundel, or may stay in place as mine have in the above picture. If they are in place, there is no need to take them out as the new badge will simply slot into the same location.

This picture shows just how good the new badges are. The original is on the left here, but they are physically identical.

And here's the bonnet roundel fitted. It should just slot into the existing grommets, though a blob of superglue wouldn't be a bad idea for security.

Facelift Cabriolet Boot Roundel

I wasn't able to source a CF rear badge for the cabriolet anywhere in the UK, so hence the delivery from the US.

Here's the existing roundel on the rear.

img0442s.jpg

The rear badge has, like the bonnet roundel, two retaining pins at 3 and 9, BUT ALSO an adhesive ring sticking it to the bodywork.

Alas, a fishslice won't work here. I used a small piece of stiff cardboard to loosen the glue before slipping a flathead screwdriver behind the badge at 12 o'clock, wrapping it in a microfibre cloth first.

img0443w.jpg

And here it is away. You can see the adhesive stain on the badge and bodywork.

img0444eb.jpg

New badge is again identical physically to the original badge, including the adhesive ring. Peel off the sticky bit and shove it in place!

Nice!

Job so far:

OK, so far then, that's the steering wheel, bonnet and boot roundels. I have the wheel centre caps to do, but will wait until the weather gets a bit better to do that and take some pics. Hope this DIY will be useful for someone out there, if not, enjoy the pretty pictures. :(

Saf, see if you can find one with the chrome trim around it though - the one that came with mine looks a little cheaper than the OEM one because the edges just 'stop'.

Hey Jason - did the wheels AAAAAAAGES ago, but as you asked, here's a pic of what the wheel caps look like in situ.

Very Tasteyyyyyy Si i'm liking them lots B) .... considering that you've had em on a while they're still looking new, the OE ones dont seem to last as long as you would expect.

Did you have all the decals from the same place/company, including the wheel decals ?

Where can i buy a c/f stearing wheel one? as thats the only badge i can change

This is the set i bought as it's UK seller and I can highly recommend them. However that comes with the front and rear badges too.

If you only want the steering wheel sticker one, they do sell them seperately too. Linky.

Ahhh, nice one Sam - that looks great.

Haven't been happy with mine since it's been on - looks unfinished as it has no chrome edge to it.

Will grab one of those myself! :D

Jason - they aren't decals, they are the full 'cap' that clicks into the wheel hub. You have to take the wheel off to fit them. :)

Cool, even better still and a great find fella.

Thats just what i will be looking for. Going to have all 4 wheels professionally re-furbed in the spring. Might aswell wait till then as it'll give chance for most of the winter road salt and grit to wash away.

There'a wheel renovation specialist near me in wolves that charges £55 a wheel for chemical strip, re-furb and powder coat or £65 per wheel for the same process but spayed factory silver instead of powder coat.

Sorry for going off topic.

Jase.
