sweetpea
Hi all, Bit the bullet today and got myself a 'Slag'! Yes an E36 328i 1995 Coupe Mechanically seems o.k, but will need a bit of work to rear arches.... very rusty.... but not beyond repair. Will obviously need a good going over ie brakes, running gear, service items etc... you get the idea. Will post some pics when i collect the car in the next few days Marty, Simon..... you may have competition! Mike

///Marty
Mate, don't know about competition, by the time you have done the 325 inlet manifold mod we have been discussing me and Si will have no chance! Good skillz on the find though, that is a lot of car for the money and for the track it doesn't really matter about the arches for the mean time. Cheers Mate... yeah hoping to collect this week and get a few jobs sorted. It needs a good service, including coolant change, brake fluid etc Will be dropping it into National tyres for an oil and filter change Castrol + filter £25.20 can't buy the oil and filter for that! All the other bits such as brake discs and pads i will do myself when funds allow. All being well it might be ready for a days drifting in march.. but will have to see what jobs i can get completed first. I could do with a cash injection..... wish money did grow on trees! Will PM you with details for March 6th Mike
sweetpea
Just had some good news about the old gal. Out of curiousity, due to the 328i being plagued with the Nikasil issue..... i rang BMW UK who were very helpful and confirmed that my car was recalled in 2001 at 76k, and had warrantied work carried out including addressing the Nikasil issue... not entirely sure if they replace the block, or whether they fit the steel liners to the cylinders. Also completed at the same time was the steering spindle replacement which also was an issue. So... gives me a bit more peace of mind Mike
das_flo
They don't mess about mate - it would've had a whole new block. Peace of mind i bet?

sweetpea
They don't mess about mate - it would've had a whole new block. Peace of mind i bet? Yeah i too would have thought so, will have a proper look at the weekend, i think there is a way of telling on the side of the engine casing if the block has been changed. I think either method whether steel liners or block is a big relief..... although i must say the engine was very nice when i drove it....i would have thought that by 143k... if it was going to fail.. it would have happened before now. Anyway.. more updates to follow as i get it ready for the track Mike
sweetpea
Picked up the beast today and managed to get it home with no hiccups Off for MOT this afternoon... fingers crossed..... If it manages to stop raining over the weekend... might manage to get a few jobs done. The brakes need a good looking at and i would like to get the coolant flushed and get a new metal impeller water pump, not sure when it was changed... if at all. The service history with the car is very impressive... seems to have spent most of its service life with BMW, which is reassuring, plenty of bills and receipts The inside of the car looks like a builders van.... so just give it a quick go with the VAC... you should have seen the sh***! Got to make it look half presentable for the test Updates to follow Mike
simonlpearce
Good luck mate, keep us posted on how she does... If she fails and its nothing major then strip her out and stick your bucket in there and i bet the tester turns a blind eye next time round. Most garages i have spoken to (i admit they were mates) have said they tend to let things slide a little easier if its blatently a track car as they know it wont get used on the road often. sweetpea
Guess what..... It passed! Only advisory was brake pads a little low.... but i knew that before going in......and they are getting changed this week, so happy days Just hoping now that it stops raining, so i can get a few jobs done. Car needs a good clean..... seems to be more moss on it than paint at the moment.... it has been parked under a tree, so you can imagine the mess! sweetpea
I know i know Here you are..... a couple of quick and dirty pics for those interested...... As you can see.... quite tidy but needs work on the rear arches.... managed to source a local body panel supplier today, who can supply the replacement arch panel for about £30 squid a side.... so might go with that option and cut these away... they really are shot at. sweetpea
Looks great mate! Bet you'll have fun stripping it all out! Yeah .... can't wait now..... don't want to strip too much out just yet as i intend to use the car reasonably regular just to keep it running tickety boo while the weather is crap. Insurance and MOT all sorted, just need to get Tax tomorrow morning, so it might as well get some use Mike
///Marty
Good man Mike, you picked it up! £30 a side is very reasonable, are you still planning on a bit of a flair before paint?
sweetpea
Good man Mike, you picked it up! £30 a side is very reasonable, are you still planning on a bit of a flair before paint? Hi Mate, I really don't mind the standard size to be honest.... and at least the standard 16" 225 rears are dead cheap to buy...... I'm guessing that if i am going to be using on the circuits, i'm really going to give the tyres some abuse, so will most likely retain the original. I went in to GSF yesterday and priced some front and rear vented discs.... only £16 for standard budget ones.... £30 odd for the brembos.... i was very surprised how cheap they were The one thing i will defo need to change in time is the suspension set up. Definately needs something a bit firmer.... got quite a lot of body roll at the moment, i think the shocks and springs are getting a bit tired. If i get the discs... that might a job for the 7th if you're up for it? Mike
