Phantom Mark
I thought I would just write this message to further promote to you fellow Diesel owners the importance of understanding how your killing your cars. For those who find this next part "sucking eggs" tough titty, plenty of people out there have no clue about what I'm about to preach ------------------- You Diesel BMW was very kindly fitted with something called EGR, exhaust gas re-circulation, basically it passes your exhaust gasses back through your intake manifold to further reduce emissions etc. To achieve this the gasses must pass through a vacuum operated valve which over time will become clogged with burnt sticky carbon deposits, this eventually makes the valve stick and also can drastically reduce the intake size because the bore of the intake becomes encrusted with crap, btw, and this is why your slowly killing your car, this also then goes straight into your intake manifold, also becoming slowly sludged up with the black sticky death, over time your performance will decrease, your economy will get worse, maybe even you will suffer other failures - who knows, the bottom line is if you have a car with more than 30 - 40k on it your starting to kill your engine already ! You can purchase a bypass kit from the bay for around 50 quid, very easy to fit and well worth the time and effort, I fitted mine when it had 85k on the clock, instantly I had around 3 - 4mpg better on average, slightly less turbo lag and stronger pull in the higher revs with the engine wanting to rev more freely. These pics I have enclosed show the crap your building up, it was already scraped clean of at least the same amount again on a previous attempt, I took those pictures before refitting the valve prior to part exchanging the car, of course when I was finished I had the valve fully clean, taking off the inlet manifold on the other hand is slightly beyond my knowledge and understanding so who knows how bad things were inside there !!!! Incidentally my EGR bypass valve for the 320d/330d is in the E46 parts section if someone wants a cheaper "clean" used one............. Enjoy the pics !!!!!!!!!!! Phantom Mark
I have actually got the pics ready for a proper DIY guide..........this post was simply to highlight the need for Diesel owners to understand how they are killing their cars , hence in general ? I like the look of it in the DIY section, as this will get lost in general mate. You can always edit onto the end hence saving you time later in your updated DIY thread, everyone will still see it because most click on the "view new posts" button anyway (know I do) Besides, your already took it apart, showed everyone the vile mess, and helped introduce a solution and extra mpg........I'd say that a pretty valuable DIY as it is bud! Rock on MARK!

suhail97
My car's done 116k and I've just changed the egr for the bypass valve. I wouldn't say its a massive difference but from 1500rpm to 2000rpm it does pick up quicker/smoother/stronger My egr was filthy too, glad I've removed it. Although I've kept it just in case it fails emissions, come MOT day.

You will have no problems at the MOT dont worry, mine was recently tested without the EGR fitted
simonlpearce
Yeah baby did this on my shed, or something very similar and it made it soooo much smoother to run. That said it is a Rover and had done 100k now so any little helps, even flushing the coolant.
Silver Streek
Does bypassing the EGR not throw up any faults on the ECU putting it into safe mode????????

Silver Streek
Nice one, another item to add to my shopping list. Are there any preferable guys on ebay to buy a bypass kit from??? Or shops in the real life sense for that matter??
simonlpearce
Could you not just cover the hole with a small piece of sheet metal?
Phantom Mark
No and yes, it could be done but you would not get the nice clean airflow from the intercooler pipe into your intake manifold, which kinda defeats the ultimate benifits of doing it apart from disabling the recirc, besides I have one for sale nice and cheap in the parts dept
Butch
hi mate im guna get one of the by pass valves of ebay is it hard to fit do you have to block anything off? is it a straight swap?
Phantom Mark
You can get the kit from the bay which is simply plug and play, however its a slightly better to make your own custom blanking plate with a peice of 2mm mild steel. YOu then use that to properly blank out the feeder pipe at source, makes for a much tidier and nicer install IMHO.
woody37
Just fitted mine after having a new manifold fitted. Got mine off Ebay for £35, really pleased with it and very easy to do. A note.... Ensure you tighten the clip back up well on your air pipe. I didn't and it popped off when I was testing it out on the road. There was a pop and then a loss of power. I pood myself, thought the turbo had gone, but couldn't see any smoke. How relieved was I when I found the pipe had come off ? !!! So far, in comparable driving, I am getting about 2mpg better since the new manifold and bypass mod and it does feel smoother.
Phantom Mark
Enjoy, you cant do this mod on the new engines, including my E60 Sensors all over the damned things.

Phantom Mark
By that time all my EGR and intake manifold with be full of deposits and knackered no doubt, some guys in the E60 scene have tried various ways so far with no joy
simonlpearce
I assume it is possible though but hard to do without throwing any fault lights, or am i mistaken?
Phantom Mark
Impossible without throwing those warnings ATM, thats not to say someone, somewhere may have found a way, i've just not found it yet and it's obviously not common knowledge. The new EGR's have a vaccum and pressure sensor or something amoung other things
simonlpearce
Could you not just bypass the EGR so you dont get all the crud then get someone like Onkar to program the ECU to think that those sensors either are working or are no longer needed. Just a thought really....
