54 Plate E46 320d Egr Bypass

Recommended Posts

hello all just a quick question, ive just brought an egr bypass valve from ebay but before i fit it was wondering if my car is the one that will trigger the engine light coming on? ive fitted a diesel tuning box to it and its transformed the car but think im going to remove this as ive heard that these can cause injectors to burn out and genrally dont help the engine.

cheers, ben

Hi and welcome to the forum,

I've heard of a few 2004 cars not reacting very well to the EGR bypass.. Some cars come up with the EML light and some dont. Best thing to do is give it a go and get it fitted, if the light appears then remove the bypass..

Over and above this though i'd be de-flapping the engine. Have a look a this for more info - http://www.pmwltd.co.uk/swirl_flaps.pdf

Also make sure your crankcase breather filter has been changed to the later vortex type ones. You CAN get one that is a cylinder of foam (A.K.A "Loo roll style") which can break off and destroy your turbo.

Do those 3 things and you're sorted

well i fitted the bypass reset the trip drove it for 0.4 miles with it fitted and the engine light came on! the egr valve that i took off was soo clogged up so just going to clean that all out and refit it. hopefully the car wont go into limp mode as i cant put it back on until tomorrow.

Wow that looks pretty bad mate!

This is mine when I cleaned it out (my car had done approx 95k by this point) but tbh im pretty sure my EGR has been cleaned/replaced previously..

With regards to EML light im not 100% sure if it'll go off by itself. I think it will once you've refit the original EGR, if all else fails an Independent garage with a reset tool can get rid of it for you for not too much money.. Either way it looks like your car doesn't like the bypass.. Sell the one you bought on eBay or something and get the deflap done ASAP!!

Once deflapped at least you dont have to worry about them snapping off and destroying the engine. Im in the same boat with my 330d. The 204bhp model comes with a larger EGR and more sensors so can't be bypassed. I've fit the vortex style filter and deflapped it now so all the major failure possibilities are covered now!

Would've been nice to get a bypass but if it can't be done then its not such a big deal now i've done the other bits..

Cant believe how clogged up the EGR vales are... My 51 plate compact 320D was much cleaner... only 56,000 tho!

Deff get the crank case breather changed to the Vortex type, £23 from BMW ... My loo roll filter was clogged badly with thick black oil...Not good!
