Subframe Issues

Recommended Posts

Williams BMW in Manchester quoted me somewhere on the region of £340 over the phone for the donut.

I'm tempted to try it myself actually.

I would never take a car as old as an E46 into a BMW dealer, you'll never see that money back come resale time. You're much better off taking it to a mechanic you trust or a BMW indy.

If you want to do it yourself, click here for a DIY guide. If you're friendly with a local garage, take it there and do it on a ramp, otherwise just jack it up real high (with axle stands ofcourse).

So to clarify cars past Y reg are ok?

Is it still worth booking a later 3 series into bmw for an inspection

And from what reg will they fix these 51 onwards?

If its any consolation I have a Y reg (2001) s/c 330i touring with alot of extra horses packed in and no sub frame issues so far. I always get my garage to check the condition of the subframe every time its in the garage. I will utlimately get the subframe reinforced with steel strengthening plates before I increase the s/c psi again. I am no expert on the sub frame issues but have been told it was more prevalent on the verts and saloons for some reason. my garage has quoted me £700quid to do all the welding and strengthing work required this price excludes the price of the e46 UUC reinforcement kit.

I'm getting a deep thud/clunk noise from the rear of the car when i either change gear and im sure it happens when i release the clutch, ive been in my mates e36 and that does the same thing, is there something wrong or is this thudding noise common on the Bimmer? I cant imagine its natural. Also i had a reasonable oil leak and the engine temp hit the roof, ive had it off the road for a couple of days until i can get time to take it to see a specialist, and suggestions on what it may be, im driving an e46 1999 328?

Pretty sure it's up to 10yrs old with a full dealer service history up to 100000 miles, you have no hope in any case, sorry, it is repairable with a reasonable competency of welding, see my DIY in the DIY section.

Well it's not what you know its who you know ;)

You know, gloating about how you got special treatment because of who you know to get something sorted for free when people are asking genuine questions about how to deal with the problem just makes you look like a knob.

Yeah, that response just makes you look like more of a knob. Well done!

Why would I be jealous of you making posts that make you look like a knob?

I don't think mit cares whether your car was actually fixed or not, he's saying there may be people with subframe issues who can't get it fixed FOC and you're here boasting about how you had the work done for free because of how you know people, which is what makes you look like a knob.
