Swirl flaps!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

This is on my to do list aswell..

This is the company that sell the blanking plates (you could just put a screw in the current flap if you want) but its a pain in the ar*e removing the current flaps to see which size you need to order.. According to the site below it could be either/or..

Will be investigating this more and probably getting it done around xmas time..

Get it off you're 'to do list' and onto you 'done' lists ASAP B)

If money is an issue, use the self tapping screw method - it is equally as effective!

It takes about 1 hour to remove the manifold - if you do it in the morning, phone the order through at linchtime, delivered next day, screw them on - job done - NO EXCUSES <_<

Right, definitely something I'm going to be looking in to. Does anyone know whether the MY2004 330d 204bhp engines are as susceptible?

Any merit in replacing the swirl flaps for the newer one piece version?

Do any gaskets need replacing as well?

Yep that engine has the swirl flaps. But it 'should have' the newer 1 piece moulded swirl flaps, even thought it is only a 1 piece item the flaps could still break off and get ingested into the engine & turbo. Better off removing the swirl flaps and getting blanking plates or tapping with screw and threadlock.

Don't need to replace any gaskets.

But whilst you have the inlet manifold off its worth giving it a deep clean with the heaviest degreaser you can find as the lovely EGR on these engines really coat the manifold it black gunk from the exhaust. Unfortunately you cant use an EGR Bypass on this engine as it brings up a warning light.

I read elsewhere of people removing them and then finding the car not as responsive at low revs (particularly 320d). Might it be best to replace all the swirl flaps for new ones? Anyone have any idea how much they are?

Had mine done on my 330cd and I can honestly say i have noticed no difference what so ever in power or pickup from any revs.

I still have the flaps in the garage and on inspection they looked good but for the sake of 70 squids definitely worth doing. While i was there i changed the crankcase breather filter to the new vortex type to increase the life of the turbo.

Get it done ASAP peeps, you never know when its gonna go BANG
