Beemer330i
Are you doing the 3 unlock button presses at the same time as keeping the lock button pressed? Might be worth leaving it a bit longer, or try the first encoding with your spare key. Yeah I have done that and I do not have a spare key. only the one diamond key which worked yesterday
bobdisk
HI I have only just joined this forum sorry. I have recently purchased a 318ci coupe. It has 2 keys - 1 remote (non working) and 1 manual non-remote key. I have had the remote key reprogrammed which now works fine. The manual key sets off the alarm if the car has been locked using the remote key & it does not unlock the boot. Both keys start the car & the alarm is silenced by the manual key once put in the ignition & turned. My question is this - is there any way to get the manual key to unlock the boot & how if possible would it be to change the manual key into a remote key? Thanks for any advice. Dave. By not being able to unlock the boot, do you mean that it wont go into the boots lock? BMWs of our ones age came with 4 keys. Two remote keys, with 3 buttons. Swap these once a month to keep them both charged. One "chauffers key", a non remote key that only fits the drivers door and ignition. The idea is if you give your car to a garage or valet they cannot open the boot or glove box !! It is coloured grey. The 4th key is a little plastic thing, that you keep in your wallet (or handbag, I am not sexist ) for emergency use only. All have a transponder chip and should be used occasionally to keep them up to date with the immobilisers rolling codes. The remote control and the start control are completely separate systems. The battery for the remote is charged when the car is going, If its dead flat, it takes a trip of about 100 miles to get it up, if its not k"£$%%dd. The transponder chip does not use the fob battery, but is powered directly from the car. Thats why it does not matter if the remote works or not, the correct transponder chip will start the car. If you buy a new key to replace a damaged one, save the little transponder chip near the blade, and put it into the new key.
Ultima
Hi I've read most of this thread but would like to clarify.... My 2001 325i sport saloon only has one key. (don't ask).... If I were to buy a suitable used key from an auction website AND a new blank key with no electronics can I have the blade cut to match the original, then simply put the electronic components from the random used key into the new freshly cut one then follow the on/off press/hold press three times etc etc. in a nutshelll will this work, or is it best to give my BMW dealer £125 and have him do it??? Beemer330i
Well despite trying the variations of the reprogramming method I have had no luck. the remote still does not work. Any suggestions? is this because I only have the one key?
Anarky187
Got to say this is a quality topic well posted you have saved me £120 for a new battery. I spoke to someone at BMW and they gave me wrong instructions

bobdisk
From what I know, a transponder chip for the immobiliser from a used key belonging to one car cannot be recoded to a different car, they are program once only devices. So if you get a new blank key with a new unused transponder, that should be programmable. But, a used remote might be reprogrammable. An independant should be able to advise/do it for a lot less ££ than a main stealer. See my earlier post 102. milldozer
Hi there was readfing your post, wondered whether or not you knew whether the battery in fobs need replacing or just recharging and how? Also, sorry to be a nuisance but was wondering whether you might perhaps know why mine just keeps locking when trying this process any help that you might offer would be of great assistance. Thanks Edited April 6, 2011 by milldozer

Miss Vee
Thanks so much for this invaluable advice! My uncle managed to bugger up my key (I think he opened the car by using the key in the lock and not using the fob!) and I was very worried I was going to have to go to a main stealer (love that phrase, have only just heard it!) to sort it out. As I type, my other fob (which gave up the ghost about 3 months ago) is sat on top of my toothbrush charger, so hopefully it'll work and I'll be able to programme that too. Thanks again - brilliant advice. Miss Vee :-)
Matt_S
Well, Ive just bought a new blade/fob and a new blade/fob with internals so I have two shiny new keys Just got to get the buggers cut! Edited May 10, 2011 by Matt_S
C_4SAD
Used this last night after my son managed to mess the key up (think it pressed on the buttons or something when playing wit them...he's only 15 months, so thought it was a teething toy!). Really helpful and saved me manually locking the car (something I've never had to do on cars, so seemed weird!)
Matt_S
Ok, question. I'm at the cutters now and he's told me that the immobiliser part will need to be done by the stealer. Will this process do both the remote function and the immobiliser?
318ci
Ok, question. I'm at the cutters now and he's told me that the immobiliser part will need to be done by the stealer. Will this process do both the remote function and the immobiliser? i may be wrong but i think u can only get keys from the dealers, non dealer keys may work once but something to do with a rolling immobiliser code means that only bmw keys will work but im sure someone more knowledgable will be along to tell u shortly let us know how u get on
bobdisk
The remote lock and immobiliser are 2 separate systems, so I think that a new unused remote can be activated following the instuctions given, but the immobiliser is for someone with the appropriate computerised diagnostics, ie, main stealer (lovely expression, and usually accurate!! !!) or a good indie (independant specialist in a single make). Again, it has to be a virgin. You can find one by googling "bmw independant (your area)" Theres bound to be one who can do it at a fraction of a main stealers cost. I am not sure a toothbrush charger will work, it and the key are electronically different systems, although the end result is similar. Ian.H
Hi lads.. For some unknown reason, my key just stopped working today. I thought maybe the battery was knackered, although I do rotate the 2 keys I have regularly.. so I tried the spare to no avail too. I've tried the suggested method (turn ignition on / off, hold down unlock, press lock 3 times) but this yields no results, with either key. Does anyone have any further ideas on what may be the issue here? Cheers.. Ian
TheMonster1975
Genius, i have been phoning around dealers and warrantys and they were no help , you've also saved me around £200 and alot of hassle, Thanks again Thought this might come in handy as a DIY for someone as some companys charge to do this! - Sit in the car with all the doors shut and windows up with your key fobs (all your fobs need to be done at the same time) - With one of your keys turn the ignition on then off and remove the key - Press and hold the unlock botton and then press the lock button 3 times. - Release all buttons and the locks will bounce up and down. - Repeat this with the other key/keys (press and hold unlock and press lock 3 times, locks will bounce) Note: Only switch your ignition on once, doing so again while programming will reset the process and you will have to start again. Hope this helps

CliffThomson
Replacing the battery is easy, fleabay for a V2020 or VR2020 battery (amazon also sell them) Solder in place. NOTE....taking the key apart, use a stanley knife. To put back together, superglue, or in my case a hot glue gun. Works well.
