Just Seen My First Lpg M3!

Since its such a nice day today and the new seller is coming to get my Z4 tomorrow, i thought it give my baby one last wash! (even though it was washed 3 days ago)

While i was there i noticed a Grey M3 with LPG conversion!

I had a bit of a chat to the owner (really nice bloke, told him to register here) and when he bought it he was told there are only 2 that exist with this conversion.

He is really happy with and says apart from servicing and the usual stuff, it costs him as much to run as a Diesel! :wacko:

Good idea!

Does it affect the performance? If it doesn't then it's a chuffin good idea to do!

I think it would do when running on LPG, however with a flick of a switch you could run it only on petrol.

On my mates Astra van his LPG filler cap is right at the bottom of the rear bumper. Pretty hard to see, but also pretty hard to fill up :wacko:

Having LPG also means no more spare tyre :)

my mate has had his converted. he is in Ilford too. i noticed no differance, and of course you can switch it back to petrol by pressing a button. However, his cap is very small and at the bottom of the rear bumper. it does not even look like a cap. but because he went with this discreet cap he has too add another attachement when filling up.

It actually increases performance with the right map :wacko:

Spanking new M6 went to the place where I remapped my car, from standard he got an extra 20% power, then after the LPG conversion managed to get it up like another 10% lower down the graph for peak power!

I keep asking for the graph of it to see lol

why wash your car yourself when your local (insert any eastern european country here) car washers can do it for you :o

i know what your saying tho, i used to wash my car myself all the time, but without a driveway anymore so its not very easy to do it on the road. :D

I struggle with that too. You've got to keep shutting the doors to let traffic or pedestrians past when hoovering, then it's a right pain in the derier to get the hose out etc....

The local carwash certainly does have it's attractions. However, there's nothing to be said for spending the whole day on your car and when it's finshed feel all chuffed with yourself.

Only time I've taken my BMW to the polish washers was before the Birthday meet this year. Never again. I was rushing and there was just not enough time to do it myself. I drove out and it was still pretty dirty. I'm sure I didn't have any swirl marks before either and now it's begining to show signs of it.

Basically, Never again! :o

What makes you say that? I think having the LPG tank could help improve sales tbh.

1. It adds the weight of an extra passanger perminently sat in your boot.

2. Tinkering around like this with a highly tuned engine may cause problems in the future

3. Fuel consumption is the last thing on a potential m3 owners mind

4. The lack of boot space this will cause

5. The Uglyness of the filler

6. LPG spoils the image of an M3.

7. If you buy this to save money, then what else in its maintanance has had costs cut too?

8. LPG conversions historicly dont hold there value as much as OEM cars (there are exceptions to this of course)

Im not against LPG, its great for 4x4's, big engined jags etc, but in a focused, balanced high revving 6 pot, i wouldnt touch it with a 6ft barge pole (and i dont know a single M3 driver that would, hence the drop in value)

Whilst some of them points are valid, I think others aren't so.

1. That is true, but I don't think it would be the full weight of a passenger. That's just the same as if you were driving round with a full tank of petrol all the time.

2. Can't comment on this because I'm not 100% sure how LPG works compared to petrol.

3. I disagree completely on this point. A lot of people buy M3's for fun at the weekend, and for normal commutes during the week. There's plenty of threads on here where people say how they'd like an M3 but can't do with the fuel consumpiton.

4. Don't the tanks go in the space where the spare wheel goes, not in the boot? Not sure if M3's have spare wheel wells or not.

5. Agree with this point, although on my mates Astra his filler cap is hidden under the back bumper and very hard to see unelss you're looking for it.

6. This is personal preference. You can still run on 100% fuel so can't see it ruining the image.

7. I think this is an unfair comment. Fitting an LPG tank is not cheap to do. You could say the same with aftermarket mods too, if the owner buys replica wheels instead of originals, what else have they cut costs in?

8. Not sure on this as I've never looked at buying an LPG car.

I think if the right buyer comes along this could definitely be more appealing than a normal M3. To others it will be less appealing. All down to personal preference I guess. It definitely wouldn't put me off buying.

i have had a LPG conversion and to be honest there is no change in performance. The tank was were the spare wheel goes and you can choose were you want the filling cap to be within reason. the price is between £1500-£2000 and you can get around 300 miles out of a tank at the price of about £30-£40 so overall it's not a bad thing to have. if you rack up the miles and intend on keeping the car you can make your money back. The only thing you have to watch out for is the tax slowing going up and up on it. ;)

For those driving in central London, it's congestion charge exempt in some cases. On the way to work the other day, had a chat with my dad about lpg. The main problem with lpg is the head gasket will go quicker than on a normal car, and the reason for it is that lpg is dry, not sure how that works but thats what he told me. He used to run lpg cars and it is possible to get more performance out of the car by turning up the lpg injection, so you can set up the system to have more power or even less.
