Tyre Stretch - Impact On Performance?

Recommended Posts

Law aside and forgetting taste, no one has mentioned the obvious factors here.

It's unsafe.

It will make the car drive like a peice of censored.gif.

This is all.

We've mentioned it in other threads and been told we need to chill out and lighten up and it's all about the stance blah blah blah :)

Sadly it's not unreasonable for this to be genuine.

There's a lot of people out there (and on here) that put "style" above life and death safety.

Probably a lot of windows getting licked.

True it is possible its genuine but the post at the top of this page leads me to think its not, no one in their right mind would open themselves up to such a flaming unless they really are stupid...

That said its certainly not the same IP as any other member on here, unless of course its from a different computer or phone.

It is becoming known around other forums how up tight and useless most members are on here, and how easy they are to wind up....

Id be interested to know which forums? I am a member on a good few which i consider to be the main ones and havent heard a peep. Infact for the past 2 years running we have had nothing but good press at the main BMW shows, especially Santa Pod where we are widely known for a good party, hardly what i would call up tight.

As for the useless comment, censored.gif to that!

Generally there is a good vibe on here which i think 99% of members will agree!

Nah, ive been on loads of forums and its always the same.

on the VX forum there are loads of guys there who flame anyone who makes any mod to their car and act like they have shares in everyone elses car. They even started a 'new' forum (type116.com) because some of the members were getting narked with the 'modders' and other members on the original one.

It's just what you get with forums.

You probably wont find it on saxosportsclub and cliosport because they are generally a lot younger than guys on Lotus/BMW/Merc forums.

As much as I air my opinion on what I think of other peoples' mods, I don't really care that much about them lol

And I question what would be the point of a forum that just talked about OEM cars with no aftermarket modding. It would soon get tiresome.

That said, I really dislike the stretched tyre slammed look generally. For example I think Jorge's car would look loads better without the stretch. It's not something I'd do to my car but seeing as once you've done it you can't really drive more than about 15mph anyway, I'm not that concerned about someone with stretched tyres hitting me.

For the record I've never actually seen a car with stretched tyres driving around where I usually drive. The only time I saw an actual E46 with stretched tyres was at Car Audio & Security and everyone was making fun of the guy's car (he works there)...

Not really getting into the whole forum debate, but the decent knowledgble members on here are few and far between.

Guy is trollin' though.

Whats the point in your previous comment then? If your not willing to debate it you might as well have not posted anything at all...

As far as decent knowledgable members go, i would have to disagree with your opinion. I doubt there are many threads that go unanswered with some form of technical solution. Also lets not forget this forum is still very young so in reflection to say a golf forum the technical knowledge is bound to be somewhat behind.

I reckon Jorge was trolling too!

they're being a spack and need shooting in the face.

 love your way with words Matt :D

I'd rather some one shot them in the face than one of them having a blow out at 120mph and killing me, my family, my friends or any perfectly innocent stranger who has the RIGHT sized tyres for their wheels fitted.

I know the speed limits are 70mph on a main road, how ever they have demonstrated with the ridiculous stretch tyres that laws and safetly are of very little importance.

Agreed. I'd be interested to hear where. I'm on a number of the big BMW forums and not heard anything bad about us, ever.

I think it's you that's trolling to be honest. If we're all so unknowledgeable and up tight, you know where E46fanatics is.

+1. Only once have I ever not had a question answered on here. And even then there were answers, just none of them quite got it right. Every other time I've had an answer virtually straight away. Plus, I've been to quite a few meets on here now and I have to say I've found members to be anything but uptight.

It would appear Jorge that we do not share your opinion on here, however as we are a friendly and welcoming site we will welcome your opinion and let you express it freely :)

All those who have been to meets know we are anything but uptight and 99% of the time are very helpful :)

I’ve got to say that sometimes this forum does appear very oem only, i mean i see the obv mods like wheels and black grills but it seems anything else is unaccepted and fronded upon.

One thing that is really bothering me is the whole myth "stretch is dangerous" if that is the case, then why do Mazda rx-8's come with stretch as standard to improve the ride handling/setup? now when i say stretch its ever so slightly, but never the less still stretch!

Don’t get me wrong there are times when stretch does look very stupid, but the normal stretched amount looks and drives fine.

I used to run stretch tyres on my old polo, not once did i have a blow out nor did i roll off/out the tyre, and i pushed my little polo on bends alot.

Most things are dangerous when taken to the extreme. I (accidentally) have a slight stretch on my rear wheels because they sold me 4 of the same tyre when actually my wheels are staggered and I didn't even realise this myself until the MOT chap pointed this out to me. That said, he still passed my car anyway. Mental stretch where the rubber is struggling to stay on the rim probably is dangerous in extreme cornering though, because where the sidewall of a correctly fitted tyre would start to stretch under these cornering forces, a stretched tyre will already be at full stretch and would be more likely to come off the rim.

That said, the incidence of stretched tyres coming off rims is very low, so you could say evidence suggests it's not dangerous.

There are many sides to every argument really. I still think crazy stretched tyres look stupid, mainly because the wheel sticks out way past the tyre. If they made trapezium-shaped tyres that actually fitted on the rim properly but had angled sidewalls, I think that would be a nice look to have :)

There is definate leeway in tyre fitments. I had 8j rims all round on my previous car with 215 front and 225 back.

Most tyre manufacturers advise quite clearly what is tollerable and clearly state that anything outside of those recommendations is unsafe.

You are taking your life and any one on the road near you in to your hands by doing it. It's about time that there were laws passed that tyres fitted to the wrong sized wheel per their recommendation was illegal.

Sadly it's not and people will continue to do it.

As for the OE attitude. If you want to barry up a car buy a barry car like a Saxo.

BMW's are premium brand cars. Sadly the price of some of the lower spec E46's is falling into barry boy territory in terms of price. They then stick a crap body kit and terrible "mods" to them and think it's some how improved what is a fantastic car from the factory.

I'm not against mods/customization. But I think some things are appropriate and some things not. I also think BMW did a very good job on my car so wont be changing anything for it's appearance, handling or performance.

Us OE people have as much right to express that opinion as any barry boasting about Halfords side skirts and blue washer jets quite frankly.

Commenting doesn't mean I want to get involved in a debate, and I fully standby my statement of knowledgable members being few and far between.

99% of replies are 'Go to indy, get codes read, blah blah blah' - whilst I know this is what is best to do in most cases, unless they are the common faults, not many people can offer indepth advice, although those who can are very very good at it.

I use Simon as 1 example, asking about a diff, how many replies did that get?

Another example is what Nutz posted the other week about the Diff ratios for a 330cd.

I know where E46fanatics is, and I use that forum for any technical help I need.

I don't see this site as much of a place for help, more as the community. Think you took what I said as saying the site was censored.gif.

And as for stretched tyres, broken record comes to my mind, not to add that picture Nik posted is just of a blowout isn't it? Seen it mentioned on other forums. And when I said other forums earlier I meant none BMW ones, ones aimed more towards a modified market (WW, SW...)

One last point, there is a medium between OEM and "barry" as everyone seems to call it. I wouldn't say my car is very OEM, but I wouldn't say its Barry either. Just because you want to modify a car past black grills and cs splitters does not mean you are going to run to the nearest Halfords and buy everything in stock.

+1!

I got tints and was called barry :(

Keep in mind a lot of these barry comments are just to wind people up. It's just an ongoing joke on here rally.

I definitely wouldn't call tints barry, Josh. Nowadays infact the only cars I really see with tints are 5 and 7 series!
