Wheel Speed Sensors

Recommended Posts

Hi Lads,

Can anyone help me out with this matter. I have the DSC & handbrake lights on and am going to clean all contacts between speed sensors but i just want to make sure I clean the right thing? Has anyone done this before and is there a picture of what I am looking for? I plan to do this tonight after work as we have indoor space but after that I will have to wait onother week with tail happy action, and not the good sort

If you have any ideas or pics / links please can you reply.

Many thanks in advance.

It's likely just a faulty ABS sensor (aka speed sensor). They read small notches inside the spinning hub to work out the speed of the wheel, hence if once locks up, it will apply ABS, or if your car starts to slide it will allow DSC to cut power.

Cleaning them isn't really an option. You often have to butcher the sensor out of the hub - rarely do they just pull out intact.

Good news is its a fairly simple fix. You will need to get a diagnostic done to find out which sensor it is (one on all four wheels), and then either replce it yourself, or get them to do it.

However - a BMW ABS sensor is circa £90, one from ECP is £30. Your choice...

Fitting is just removal of a hex bolt and then pulling (read butchering ) the old one out of the hub. Fit the new one, plug in, and you're away.

Hope that helps mate.

If there was one man I wanted to answer that it was you! When I wrote it I was thinking! Jesus I hope Keith sees this ;):P

Thanks Pal.

So I assume that its a faulty sensor (broken) or faulty (dirty & repairable). I might just try one and if it plays hardball I will walk away. Now is as good a time as any to see what they are about. Monday morning diagnostic it is then.

Have a good weekend mate.

The only thing I'd say is there really isn't much that cleaning it will do mate as they are not optical. The usual problem is it just faults to open circuit (break in the cable/sensor element).

You more than likely need a new one, and you don't want to take out a good one to clean it and end up damaging it!

The other thing it could possibly be is a faulty ABS pump, wich is more costly, but chances are 9/10 times its just the sensor.

changed my drivers rear a few months ago not a chance it was coming out in one piece, really easy to change as above one hex bolt is all that holds it in and to get at it you just take the rear wheel off, got mine from ecp fitted fine.

to get teh old one out i had to smash it out screwdriver and hammer job then long nose pliers to pull the bits out good thing is the hubs are hollow behind so small bits that go inside will fall out the bottom i just used the pliers to stop anything falling in incase.
