Jay.
That's the thing Ben - my cars on its arse , I've scuffed all the rear brand new csl's from having rear seat passengers, as its got m3 offsets, it's got a brand new painted front bumper on it & it's a strictly 4 seat car. I want to cherish it a bit more & let it just sit on the drive & polish it. I'll take it out with the Mrs at the weekend & for an evening drive. Will be nice to just take a banger to work where no one gives a toss dinging the door or worrying about having more than just one front passenger in it

Like I said it worked out better financially for me having 2 cars so you've nothing to lose! I do miss having something to cart stuff about in - the inside of my clubby took a bit of a battering when I was moving house. Jay.
Jay.
I'm just up for giving it a shot, if I hate it - it's no great loss can just sell it on & cancel insurance
bennno2005
I'm just up for giving it a shot, if I hate it - it's no great loss can just sell it on & cancel insurance With insurance I went with Sky for my DC5 and they matched the 8 years no claims I was using on the 306. Total insurance bill for both cars was around £800 a year FC. S7UUK

S7UUK
Yeh mate same with flux, rang up other day -were happy to mirror the ncb Good to know! I went with Flux shortly after you. And doing approx. 16,000 miles a year in the 330ci is costing in fuel, maintenance and tyres A daily is on the agenda over the next couple of months. Jay.
No, my diesel one does 60mpg. I just meant the mk4 is a good daily. They're cheap to repair. Why don't you want a diesel for a daily?
Arnold
Yeah thanks. I just thought if I buy something for £600-£800 better be a 1.2-1.4 petrol than a diesel. I don't trust old diesel they have many problem (read many horror stories) maybe good on fuel but I dont do many miles just don't want to use the bimmer every day so thats why I'm thinking to buy a small petrol as I'm doing 300-400miles per mouth or less. Jay.
if you read all internet horror stories, you'd never leave your front door & wrap yourself in cotton wool. I dont want to use my bmw either, hence buying the golf. A 1.9 TDI golf is probably one of the most bulletproof diesels you can buy for sub £1000. make sure you buy one thats had a new timing belt & possibly a clutch/turbo & it'll be good for a long time. I didn't bother with a 1.2 petrol as i still want it to be able to overtake the odd push bike on my way to work
bennno2005
Personally I'd rate the 2.0 HDI I had in my 306 HDI. Plus point of these is also that they don't have the stupid dual mass flywheels in the VW's so the clutches last forever and aren't expensive to replace when they do give up the ghost. Only 90bhp but the 306 isn't a heavy car so overtaking etc isn't really an issue and they handle really well. When cornering in a MK4 Golf / A3 it feels like you're sat in a cheesecake. I agree with Jay though you're safer with an older diesel. They don't have half as much to go wrong on them as the newer, more powerful ones. Sam
I fear I maybe joining this club soon. The golf is well over it's yearly mileage allowance, it'll now cost £72 per 1000 miles over. There is 5 months left and we're 1k over already. Projection says we'll end up about 5k over this year, £350. Then there is next year... Same again? That's paid for a 3rd car. I also want something to take when I don't want to take the Z (snow/ice etc). The missus can use the 3rd motor every so often to keep her mileage down, or when we just go for a dog walk, we don't need the golf. When I take it, she'll revert to the golf again. LiamGTR
Surely the price of buying, maintaining, taxing and insuring a 2nd car offsets the savings you'd spend from just running a 330Ci? I'd get it if you were running a tuned Skyline/Evo/Impreza/Supra as a daily, but not a 330? Edited July 23, 2015 by LiamGTR TriggerFish
Jay.
That's exactly it, your not me, I'm me so I like a 330ci as a second car. You stick to your rice mobiles.

Would it not make more sense just to buy your Mrs a car outright and sack off the rented Golf? Then you can do as many miles as you want. I'd get it if you were running a tuned Skyline/Evo/Impreza/Supra as a daily, but not a 330? I agree in terms of cost its negligible and I think 330's are pretty cheap to run on the whole. For me I had a second car when I had my DC5 (also very cheap to run) and it was more because I wanted to keep it immaculate and keep the mileage down. I expect that Jay and some others feel the same about their 330's as I did about my DC5. Wheras I bought my Clubsport specifically to be an all-rounder. Each to their own really. It doesn't work out as expensive as you'd think having two cars as you still use the same amount of tyres, brakes etc in two cars as you would in one. Its just the tax, insurance and MOT which if you do enough mileage is offset by savings in fuel costs. This comes up too frequently. Firstly, you can't sack off a lease. Secondly, I don't have £25k to drop on a golf, not that I'd want to. She also doesn't want a £800 car as her daily. The 3rd car is mainly to keep the Z in check. I can leave it at home if it's raining or I can't be arsed with it, saving a bit of mileage and wear & tear. Also to keep me out of snow/ice in it. But, it would also mean she could save a few miles on her golf. Driving it 1 in 5 commutes isn't that bad, but would save some dosh over a year or 2. bennno2005
