mattwatson
So what about the 1 series coupe, i know they brought that out in 2007. does that suggest it will be a couple more years till the new model comes out?
simonlpearce
This is one fugly car!!! Not really much of a fan of any of the later BMW models, maybe as i mature they will grow on me but for now they just seem to be lacking something, and most of them you could easily mistake for a lexus or similar.... Matt_330CI
Nah, still f**k ugly except being black, most of the hideous detail is well and truly hidden. Make it red or silver and you'd see just how horrific it actually is.
mit
I never understood why people cling onto older shapes. I pretty much always prefer the new shape of any car. Exceptions include the facelift Ford Mondeo in the 90's, and the Ford Scorpio that replaced the Granada!

Just like i think the E46 is one of the best shape 3 series, if only it wasnt such a boring drive.
Matt_330CI
It's not when it has an M on it Simon. Mit, you sure about the Mondeo facelift? The original is an ugly beast, the facelift sorted out all the wrongness. I'm sure there's hundreds of cars I can think of that are waaaaay uglier than their predecessors. Especially in the American market. 1964 Ford Mustang 1970 Ford Mustang 1975 1980 Mustang 1990 Mustang 1995 Mustang It's only the latest Mustang, which echo's the original very very closely that's returned to good looking. Same with all the American muscle cars, Corvette, Camaro, Challenger, Charger - they all got progressively uglier with each generation until finally they went retro and back to their roots. Here's a contravertial one for every one - E-Type or XJS?
mit
lol notice how they are all fords!! Yep I thought the mondeo facelift was rank - that oval grill with weird triangluar headlamps didn't do it for me, thought the original face of it looked better. Same goes for the Escort and Fiesta at the time!
Matt_330CI
All Ford Mustangs Mit - see what I did - subsequent models of the same cars? Triangular headlights? Do you mean the mk2 rather than the facelifted mk1? This is a mk1 Mondeo (my dad has one, it's pig ugly) This is what most people consider a mk1 facelift. And most regard this as an actual mk2 I believe I actually quite like them tbh, they're really comfy, huge and well built inside, handle ok and with the seats down take as much as an articulated lorry. Wash
The grills are massive lol Saw the new 7 series today, the grill is huge: The only BMW I like as of late is the E92, the rest are very ugly. Wash
No like? <image> The 6 series is pretty nice, not a huge fan of the newer one though, looks too "business woman/douchebag" to me. I do quite like the F10 too, this new 1 series is cringeworthy. Hopefully sales will drop hugely with this new model and then BMW will realise they should sack the designer. EDIT: Forgot the new Z4. I would've been better off saying that the new 1 series and the X series all look ugly. Edited August 3, 2011 by Wash
Gaz
EDIT: Forgot the new Z4. I would've been better off saying that the new 1 series and the X series all look ugly. Damn right! I was following one of these in my way to work and it looked like such a beast! I agree about the newer X series looking ugly too.
Matt_330CI
I saw a brand new 640i a few weeks ago, I can confirm, like many BMW's and Jaguars of recent history, it looks 100% better in the metal than it does in any picture you'll see. Perhaps a new 1 series in the metal will change my mind, but in every picture it sucks - that front end is pure ugly and the rear is pure boring. It's like an ugly woman with a crap hair cut. No saving graces.
Wash
Damn right! I was following one of these in my way to work and it looked like such a beast! <image> I agree about the newer X series looking ugly too. It's weird how they can make such great looking cars (like the Z4) but then make something as ugly as this 1 series, or the X6, or the 5 series GT. I think what they are trying to do is divide the range of cars they have between different demographics. For example, the new 5 series will mostly be bought by business men/middle-aged men etc, so they give it a very corporate but still it has that slightly aggressive BMW look to it. On the other hand, the Z4 will be probably be most often bought by those who actually enjoy driving and like cars, so they give it a very aggressive and sporty look. I guess the one series is aimed at mostly women since the 1 series has always been a woman's car (sorry to anyone who has a 1 series ) and they're just expanding on the womanly look. Matt_330CI
They're not though, women are mostly concerned with vanity when it comes to cars - "ooh look, it's pink and cute, I want that Micra" See what I did there, it's a s**t car but they like it because it's pink and cute. The 1 series is most definately not cute. It reminds me of the monkey rats from Brain Dead. And BMW, as far as I know, wont sell a bird a pink car. If that car sells it'll be down to badge desire as to look at, it's horrific. Remember the original 130 on top gear? Vs the Golf R32 "It'll be faster round our track because it's rwd and a BMW" Wrong - the Golf spanked it. So it was cheaper, faster, more practical and looked infinately better from every angle. mit
BMW will sell a pink car if a customer orders it - the individual option will let them choose any colour they want (can be colour matched to a handbag for example). They'll do the same for the s1000rr I'm about to order too
