E46 Vert Ski Hatch Sub Build Progress

Recommended Posts

Cant wait to the see the pics of it finished off individual330ci! Oh and thats a well wicked colour scheme on your leathers!!

Well my mate had a friend selling a few subs and i get the choice between a rockford and a kicker sub! Think the rockford ones the r2sd2-10 or something! Both 10" ones mind! Im an audio noob so know idea whats better! Ill just pick whichever one looks nicer when i finally see him!

Never done any car audio stuff before so its just a fun project! Not really after earth shattering bass either lol just a little punch in the car as standard it just sounds pants!

Bikealarmblair - as its a 'vert i assume the aerial only turns on when the headunits on? So could you tap into the power feed into the aerial in the boot without having to hide cabling all the way to the head unit?

Lol trickster no oem nav for me! Just oem business cd headunit with a dension 100 ipod kit connected :-)

Just make sure the sub you get is a shallow mount sub! It specifically needs to be a shallow one due to the tight space in the ski hatch.

Make a post in the ICE section for the remote query and I'm sure someone will have done it and will help you get it sorted!

Pics are uploading to photobucket as we speak so final update is coming in a few mins!

Right well it is all finished now so here is the final update:

With the box made and in, the next step was making it all look pretty!

So next up I made the face/ beauty board that goes inside the car. I measured the correct size and got the Jigsaw on a sheet of 6mm MDF.

IMG00838-20110829-0924.jpg

Marking the hole- old skool method but one of the best- bit of timber baton and 2 screws:

IMG00839-20110829-0946.jpg

Hole cut and trial fit:

IMG00840-20110829-1013.jpg

IMG00841-20110829-1054.jpg

I also bevelled the edge around the sub to make it look a bit better- Cant really see this in the pics but looks good in the flesh....

IMG00842-20110829-1054.jpg

The next step was then to start trimming- I bought some black suede as I was unable to source some alcantara at a reasonable cost and for the size of it the suede is ideal:

IMG00843-20110829-1314.jpg

Board finished and fitted:

IMG00844-20110829-1427.jpg

IMG00845-20110829-1427.jpg

With the front done and looking good I then moved on to the rear- I bought some grey acoustic carpet off ebay but it was far too dark...... The old sub box I was using however was a good match:

IMG00744-20110809-1239.jpg

The above sounded great but I had no boot and it looked rubbish- It was only ever a temporary measure until I came up with a ski hatch solution anyway.

So the enevitable happened and I stripped that off and trimmed the rear of the box with it:

IMG00846-20110829-1641.jpg

In the pic above the top piece of carpet is baggy as it isnt glued down there, with the carpet on the top and sides it didnt fit through the hole so I put it in then glued the fabric on after from the boot, so it looks like this:

IMG00848-20110829-1702.jpg

So with that done it was then time to put the interior back in- after a serious hoover of the inside and trim clean from all the MDF dust it all began to take shape.

IMG00849-20110829-1822.jpg

IMG00850-20110829-1828.jpg

IMG00851-20110829-1846.jpg

IMG00852-20110829-1846.jpg

IMG00853-20110829-1847.jpg

To say Im chuffed with it is an understatement, the finish has came out much better than I ever thought and it is a massive improvement on HK.

Thanks for looking!

I'll make sure I get a shallow mount sub to fit!, how does it sound in comparison to that big ol' pioneer you had in there before?

And I totally love that leather colour scheme B)

Thanks, the pioneer was very deep boomy bass, the Rockford Fosgate is no where near as boomy but it sounds very punchy and crisp, sound quality is great and it does handle bass well for its size!

Good write up! This is something i will be doing, as the std HK sub is poo!

Cheers mate, it was a labour of love at times but it came out such a neat/ high quality build! Much better than I had imagined it would!

The sound quality is great from it too considering its such a small box too! Shallow mounts really are the way forward!

I took the remote 12v feed off the Harmon Kardon amp located in the rear quarters- I spliced the RCA's for the amp into the HK amp loom too- so I can adjust the bass treble and balance through the HU.

I followed the guide that comes with the BavarianSoundWerks BSW ib110 kit that is designed specifically for e46 verts with HK...
