Gaz
What do you guys think is going to happen to the price of E46 M3's over the coming year or so? Do you think they're likely to take a huge plummet now the brand new 3 series is out? Surely there must be a new M3 on the horizon? As a lot of you know, I'm in the market for a new car. I had my heart set on a 996, but I walked out of a friends last night, saw my car parked there and decided I like it too much. I just wish it had more power. The logical step up is an M3. It'll have a decent amount of power, be comfortable and the interiors still hold there own against a lot of modern cars I think. The only thing worrying me is how much they're going to depreciate. Looking at the prices of E36 M3's nowadays, I wouldn't want the E46 M3 to be at that price level within a year. What do people think is likely to happen to the E46 M3 prices? Before anyone says it, I know 335i/d's are as fast as the M3 and a lot newer, but for the price they are for a nice one (£17k ish), I know I'd only get £10k ish when I come to sell it in a couple of years. Also, a lot of people I have spoken to that have owned E9*'s have said they're just not as fun as E46's.
mit
Yeah they will, they aren't that special as they made so many of them. Decent E36 M3 seems to have levelled off at around the £5k mark. I'd expect the E46 to level off at around £8-10k for a while but start to go down again once E92 prices drop. I drove an E92 for 3 months and it was way nicer than an E46 in my opinion. Yeah if you drive like you stole it the E46 is a bit more fun, but if you drive like you stole it the E36 is more fun than the E46 too.
Quiksilver_TR
Id expect to see a drop in price, with the introduction of a new model and also the ever increasing costs to run/fuel them. I think the e36 might start to see a rise, just as the e30s did, but I dont think they will go to the same level as the e30s. Aside to this, a mate of mine picked up a 7year old X5 4.8 V8 in damn good condition with virtually all the extras for £5k! That was a £60k+ car new. Colossuss
Any car is going to drop in price, it just depends how much it drops Also, the main reason I think to keep clear of newer cars is the tax!
Gaz
Any car is going to drop in price, it just depends how much it drops Exactly. Whilst the 335i may be as quick, it'll lose value a lot quicker than the E46 M3 would. This is why I'm wondering how much the M3 is likely to drop. I bought my 330 right at the worst possible time, I don't want to do the same this time

SamN
I reckon you'll be able to pick up an old one in reasonable condition for sub £6k in a year.

Thats a JUMP in price for both!!! 3-4k gets a nice E36 M3, and 8-10k is already plenty for a nice E46. Has been for ages. They wont be immaculate with nav but still perfectly fine cars. Gaz
I reckon you'll be able to pick up an old one in reasonable condition for sub £6k in a year. This is what scares me. I lost £5k in two years on my Clubby. I don't want to do the same with the M3.
pablo
dont buy an M3 then, its only going to get worse. Petrol is only going one way also.
SamN
The ///M will depreciate less than the clubby. That was based on a current ///M of £7-7.5k (they are around).

Wash
Yeah IMO I think the M's are likely to depreciate less, I've noticed that they've hardly dropped since the past year. The only ones that are cheap are the shagged ones
pablo
work out what it will cost to change. If only a couple of k then go for it. The M3 wont depreciate more than the 330 and its not like its an investment. Life is too short. If youre going from a 5k car to a 20k car and losing half in 2 years, then thats a little different. Colossuss
You could say that about any car forever though, then you'd just stick with your 330 haha I dont think the price of an M3 is going to go down to £6k by next year, there is no chance that will happen. It took 4 years for them to go from £17k to £10k 8-10k is already plenty for a nice E46. £8k? No way, you wont get a decent M3 for that! No with sub 100k miles. Don't forget Gaz will want an estoril blue one, so it will be £10k+ Just look for a reasonably price one with a nice amount of options so it holds its value a bit better. There is plenty of deals out there
SamN
I did the same with my 320, bought that for £10k two years ago! Luckily I sold it last year for £9k while prices had only just started to plummet. Despite the crazy low mileage, I don't think it'd make £7k if I sold it now! That's the problem with buying bigger engine'd cars. I'm thinking the same about the 350Z, which is why I'm looking at slightly older ones but with lower mileage, in the hope they'll depreciate less. SamN
Luke, this went for between £7k and £8k: http://forums.m3cutters.co.uk/showthread.php?t=50231 02 plate with 86k miles. FBMWSH. Looks very nice! Not sure on exact price as he replaced it with SOLD, but further down he mentions £7k being cheap for a car of that standard. Gaz
dont buy an M3 then, its only going to get worse. Petrol is only going one way also. This is why I want it to be fair. Petrol is never going to get cheaper, I want a fast car whilst I can still realistically afford to run one. Give it 10 years and we'll be talking £3 or £4 per litre easily. FWIW your best off sticking with the 330 IMHO. I'm bored of the 330 though. I love the look, it just doesn't have the power I want. work out what it will cost to change. If only a couple of k then go for it. The M3 wont depreciate more than the 330 and its not like its an investment. Life is too short. Think this is the best idea. Realistically I think it will cost about £5k to upgrade. Estoril M's can be had for cheap now. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMAZING-CONDITION-BLUE-2002-BMW-M3-FULL-SERVICE-HISTORY-/290699705887?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item43af0d7e1f

SamN
Realistically if you want the power for cheap... You need a bike if you get one, you won't look back!! ~600cc bikes will all get you to 60 in 3.5-4 seconds. That said, now I have a bike, I still want a faster car but I'd settle for realistic, around 6 sec to 60 give or take a bit is fine for me a 330 is pretty nippy speed-wise! Edit: To add, your £5k budget is good. £1-1.5k for bike test and bike gear. £3k for bike. <£500 insurance. Sorted? Gaz
you reckon 5k gaz? 3k surely? For the condition M3 I'd want it looks like I'd need to spend £10k, so if I could get £5k for the Clubby then I'd need £5k on top of that. Realistically if you want the power for cheap... Seriously though, few things putting me off a bike. 1) I would do something stupid on it. 2) A very close friend of mine died a few years ago on his bike (not his fault) so that has massively put me off them, and 3) My mum would disown me
