rihsabramo
Hi, I'm new just bought a E46 330d Auto 184hp for commuting. A few questions. I don't have a service book although I have a lot of receipts etc. but it's done 120k - I am going to get a full service - Oil change, Oil filter, air filter, EGR valve cleaned, fuel filter, pollen filter check other fluids. Do I need to do anything else? Also the gear changes are rather slow, is there a software update you can do to make them quicker or would a simple oil change help? Would my local garage be able to do this as I believe it is sealed for life and what oil should I use? Many thanks!
arry
I've done a lot of research into the box fluid recently. Basically I believe that Fuchs Titan ATF 4000 (http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-965-fuchs-titan-atf-4000-multifunctional-automatic-transmission-fluid.aspx) covers the early boxes' oil specs no bother, but to be extra safe I'm going with the Fuchs Titan ATF 5005 which covers all 3 of the types (http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60168-fuchs-titan-atf-5005-automatic-transmission-fluid.aspx) You'll also need a gear box filter kit - I got a Mehle kit from Ebay for ~£40. rihsabramo
I can't find the Mahle filters online? Also is it just a normal job, any garage will know how to do it or do I need a specialist and if so can anyone recommend one in the Sheffield area? Thanks
arry
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390409004073?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_2768wt_1431 It's not what I'd call a straight forward job, having researched it, but if you give the relevant research to the right garage they can do it for you. It's not complicated, nor do you need any specialist tools, but it's not a case of dropping fluid and refilling. A search on here gives some good advice. and there's some american write ups that are worth reading.
old grey steve
Without a servce book as you say you're going to do a full service which would be an Inspection 2, its worth getting the EGR valve cleaned plus on yours you don't mention "Swirl Flaps" if you don't know about them then have a read. But on your car with that mileage if it hasn't been done(or you don't have any reciepts/service book for the car) its one thing you need to be attending to ASAP otherwise your new investment could cost you a small fortune to sort out. There are some real horror stories that sadly can value wise leave your pride and joy value wise scrap. So please please get this done or at least looked in to as soon as. Re the gearbox apart from a flush its worth while changing the 2 solenoids that control the torque converter and main gearbox itself. Seems this has over the years been a hidden secret that has come to life as more owners of BMW's and indeed other marques that use this GM box have suffered failures and of course the information comes out for all to see. The 2 part numbers you'll need are 24327532013 & 24321423988 I'd also advise a software update on the gearbox software once the transmission fluid has been changed as this will ensure everything is nice and smooth. Re Gearbox Specialists if Barnsley isn't too far away in Toal BMW there was an excellent article done by the magazine re auto boxes and Martin Lowe Automatic was featured. http://www.autotransmissions.co.uk/ Re your gear changess that you report are currently a bit slow or sluggish you can to a degree reset the adaptive values but to the throttle once done the car "learns you driving style" nad its a lot snappier. I've done mine(plus had a gearbox flush-and will be again doing a flush plus changing these 2 solenoids shortly) but the difference in the throttle response is quite startling plus if you slide over to "S" or use "M" then over a short time things re gearchange in my expierience will improve, however with the mileage you've got personally I'd drain the gearbox plus change those 2 solenoids, then and only then would I have those values all re set as you'll have new solenoids on board that'll be able to cope. From memory I beleive that it isn't recommended changing values on the gearbox when old pressure solenoids are still in place in case something terminal takes place.. Hope this helps welcome to the Forum and the Auto 330d club

Hope this helps welcome to the Forum and the Auto 330d club Cheers! Very helpful! Barnsley is not too far, I assume this could be done while I wait? How much oil will I need? And what is the rough cost of an gearbox oil/filter change and replacing the 2 solenoids? I take it the solenoids are dealer only parts? How much are they? Also what's 'S' and 'M' mode, I don't have any sport mode buttons on my gearbox? Sorry for the stupid questions. Ans 'arry, do I know you from somewhere (online) MLR?? or Integra forums? Cheers! arry
You need about 10 litres of oil. The solenoids I've not managed to find anywhere but main dealer and all I've found for them so far is American $$ prices, which I don't trust for obvious reasons. They don't seem too pricey though. If you flip the gear shift over to the left when it's in Drive, the stick becomes a sort of sequential shifter - tap it up to go from 1st to 2nd, down to go from 2nd to 1st. You can also just flip it left and leave it in S mode, which gives longer ratios and holds to the red line, as well as quicker throttle response. And you'll know me from ITR-DC2 fella
rihsabramo
Cheers, never knew I has a sports mode! That's £130 just for the oil plus £40 for the filter, goodness knows how much for the solenoids and how Mich a garage will charge for the work! Have you still got the teg? arry
I spoke to Martin Lowe and they wanted to know what gearbox I have, is it GM5L40E? Thanks Lottery mate, LOL. I looked this up and there's something like 4 different boxes!! However, there is a sticker on the side of the box if you want to crawl under there Expensive, but much cheaper than a box rebuild mate. No, sold the teg about ~18 months ago, wanted some comfort Edited June 7, 2012 by arry
