kennedyuk2001
I know the bhp and torque figures for the cars, but just wondering how much of a difference there is in overtaking, basically were I live there is few bits of road to pass people. So when a small stretch comes up and you want to pass quickly (my current car 318i is way to slow to use the usual spots of overtaking.). Basically would there be much difference between the two cars to pass cars going 50ish and slower round bends (you know the type.. 20 for the corner u can do at 60 then foot down at striaght!!). Hope that makes sense. I've got the flu the now so hard to construct legible sentences. Regards
Stooza
i have a 320d and its not bad at overtaking on B roads but the 330d is far better at this exercise. Get a manual and a remap for it and everything will be an overtaking opportunity! Wash
Wash
I agree with the above, hold out for a 330d. Running costs between the 320d and 330d are pretty similar but the difference in performance is huge.
kennedyuk2001
How quick can u overtake something going at 50 compared to say standard impreza turbo, aka my previous car. The impreza has 215 bhp 290Nm compared to 320d 150bhp 330Nm, decent amount of torque on the 320.
momo
A (safely) remapped 330d will push out approx 240bhp with 380lb/ft or 500NM. Overtaking takes but a moment. lol Rich_D
Phillloyd
Please heed the advice. Iwas looking for MONTHS for a 320d. I'm sooooooo glad I bought the 330d You will not be disappointed ( they are fast as feck)
kennedyuk2001
Right well I think i'm definitely going for a 330d then, seems like they are the best of both worlds.. mpg and performance. Just need to save up some pennies now. Edited September 4, 2012 by kennedyuk2001 momo
Phillloyd
Lol I had to extend my budget by nearly £3000 Well worth it for the right one 330cd vert mint with 1 owner 39000 miles
kennedyuk2001
Sounds good Phill, 1 owner and 39000 miles would be good, but don't think i'll be spending much enough to find something quite as good as that. Prices vary hugely.. so I assume some bargains out there, just a matter of waiting, i'm in no rush so have plenty time to wait.
Longun
330 is the best bet. Wish I'd found the extra money needed to get one as that was the only issue for me. Purchase cost is less on the 320. Plus with a map and decat they are almost as quick as a standard 2.9 330d. On the flip side of that though a mapped 330 shifts. Stooza
i will get a 330d next, and it will be a manual. My 320d is an auto and it's nice but I think I'd prefer a manual.
kennedyuk2001
I prefer manual, never drove a autobox that I enjoyed, never give me a gear change when I want them too. I feel I have more control of a car with manual gearbox, get the power when I want it. momo
Shabaza
I was allured into a 330cd after test driving one also, even though initally i was after the 320cd. In terms of running cost I unfortunately have an auto (as they are more commom in bigger engines), I average 25 mpg (mainly town driving) so far thirstier then I thought....you've been warned PS Still think I made the right choice, After owning this I couldn't downgrade on power to 320cd, its too addictive
kennedyuk2001
It'll be fine, im used to impreza fuel consumptions. Besides manuals are much better on fuel and as long as I get the fuel economy on long runs I'll be happy.
Phillloyd
I'm getting 33+ mpg around town (and I'm heavy footed), can't be helped. As soon as the turbo kicks in and jolts you back it's just awesome. There's no way I could have driven mu 325 very like that and achieve anywhere near that mpg. Get one Wait for the right one though, I travelled all over for a 320cd in good condition and there were no low mileage examples, I'm do glad I waited. hughes330d
Another vote for the 330d. Ive a 320d and I quite miss the power of the 330d. A remapped 330d is in a different league. As for the auto, have you driven a 330d auto? I wouldn`t be a fan of autos, but I think it works great with the engine. Depends what you want I suppose, but they are no slouch. kennedyuk2001
Never driven a auto BMW before, last auto I had was a audi, and it was dull to drive, same with the legacy twin turbo auto I had a shot in recently, just doesn't seem to deliver a fun driving experience. What average results do 330d achieve from a remap?
hughes330d
As said, the usual is around 240bhp. Mine was 255bhp, but mine was the 205bhp model. But someone on the site has theirs at something like 286bhp.
dannyboy759
I have both a 320D and a 330D, Both remapped and although the 320 is quick compared to most other diesels its not even in the same league as my remapped 330. MY 330 was done by ecotune in Scotland and is 285bhp and 550NM and at the moment im doing about 100 miles a day combined driving and getting 48.5mpg. Which even my 320d cant match! Great car, glad I bought it and like you I was looking for another 320d and only came across this 330 by chance but im glad i did now. Go for a
Phillloyd
I filled the tank on my 330 last week £86. Reset the trip meter after a couple of miles as I forgot at the garage. Pulled up today and I've done 250 miles and still have half a tank left!!!
kennedyuk2001
550 that's pretty good, ecotune in Scotland eh, ill have to Google them. I live in Scotland so always good to know a good tuner shouldn't be to far away.

The impreza has 215 bhp 290Nm compared to 320d 150bhp 330Nm, decent amount of torque on the 320. Seeing as I used to own a Prodrive'd UK Impreza and now own a remapped 330d, I am well qualified to answer this In short, the Impreza would be quicker off the line (less weight & better traction), however once rolling the 330d is quicker, especially at motorway speeds, mine has around 500Nm of torque, which equates to superb mid-range punch with no discernible lag Overtaking is a breeze, no need to drop a gear, just boot it and away you go kennedyuk2001
6891_seb
I have a remapped 320d and it's plenty powerful for overtaking if you can afford the extra costs of running a 330d then it's a no brainer go for the 3ltr
