Windows 8 And Ie10

Recommended Posts

Pressing the return key in this window when posting messages doesn't work on Windows 8 / IE10... No difference whether it's RT on a Surface or Pro on a normal computer. Of course other sites work fine and if you use Chrome it works too, but that's a workaround rather than a solution and there's no Chrome or Firefox on RT yet anyway!

We don't support this site on IE10 ;)

The forum isn't written by me, so I'll need to go to the providers and see what is going on. I'm sure there will be a upgrade for IE10 shortly, which I can get applied ASAP.

Yep, I was just letting you know, figured there probably aren't many users who will be reporting it but better to nip it in the bud now than have a bunch of people complaining further down the line :)

I'm ok on a PC, just means the zone is a bit tricky for me on my Surface for the time being!

Im on Win 8 too, and noticed this. Off topic: Mit how is the Surface?

Not strictly off topic as the Surface has Win8/IE10

I like it overall, nice screen, vibrant colours, decent screen resolution, mostly intuitive experience and I like the keyboard, be it on screen or the touch cover. I've also got a type cover in the post but it's unlikely I'll need it.

It's got a few issues that will likely enrage people in some way/shape/form:

1. It's heavy. If you're holding it with one hand and swiping etc with the other, it can get quite heavy, so it's not like a kindle by any means.

2. The flip stand thing is neat but there's a groove to open it on one side and the other side has a groove in the same place that's actually the magnetic power connector, so you might try to open it on that side and wonder why it won't open.

3. Speaking of the magnetic power cable it's really fiddly to plug in unless you're looking at it

4. Lack of apps. This isn't the surface's fault. They've recompiled the operating system to run on a different processor, so none of the old win32 apps that were written for x86 architecture will work. There aren't that many apps in the store either, and the lack of a dedicated facebook app is glaringly obvious

5. You'll spend ages getting your start screen tiles set up just the way you like only to move one of them and have it rearrange all the others and resize them etc, with no undo button

6. It's not immediately obvious how to close apps. There's a video you're supposed to watch and the MS guys at work told me they had a big internal debate on whether to show a few tips on screen or have the video and the video won. I told them they should have had the tips and dumped the video as nobody's going to watch it.

Other nice stuff though, is that I have win8 on one of my laptops at home. It's tied to my MS account and when I signed into the surface on my MS account (which I did during the very good first time startup experience) it already had my settings and background etc saved. If I set it up as a trusted computer it will also have my passwords stored (encrypted) across devices. Some might not like the idea of that but from a convenience point of view it's great, and I'm not exactly going to distrust microsoft to hold my data when... microsoft are holding my data on my computer anyway!

Battery life seems pretty good... so really I think it's a great product (quite pricey mind) but it needs a bit of polishing. If you're an out and out consumer trying to compare it to ipad or android it's going to fall short of your expectations, but that'll be because your'e comparing a product that's being launched for the first time against well established products. I personally prefer the UI experience to both apple or android, but I'd like to see multiple desktops like on android and decent widgets rather than active tiles.

Hope that helps?

Definitely wait for the pro. Getting the RT version has basically been an expensive experiment for me. I am thinking of returning it as there are already a few pro tablets out there priced similarly.
