frank norman
About 9 months ago my instrument cluster stopped working completely, it was exchanged for a working one from a chap on the internet, all the instuments now work but not the warning lights, break wear light is on even though they are new linings, same with automatic transmission light even though its a manual!,same with the automatic traction control, all the said lamps are on, also the buzzer to warn you have left your lights on doesnt work, same as the airbag alert. I took it to a mechanic who said it wanted reprogramming but when he tried to connect his laptop it would`nt communicate with it! can anyone help?. My car is a 2002 316 Compact. edber
Bmw software called pa soft 1.4 might be able to sort it by resetting the eeprom chip in the cluster.

mit
So has it been like this for 9 months or was it working fine and it only just started behaving this way? If it's been like this ever since you swapped it, you probably needed to get it coded at the time and didn't, or it's just faulty. If it only just started, instrument clusters have been known to behave this way when the voltage is too low, so look at your battery or alternator maybe? mit
Wait, so when did you change the cluster? Just now or 9 months ago? You haven't made it clear! I am guessing you just changed it now, which means you lived with a broken cluster for 9 months right? That means your tamper dot will probably be on as your mileage won't have been recorded correctly among other things. Either way it sounds like whatever you have in there at the moment is faulty. I may be wrong but if the new cluster has a stored mileage thats higher than your car, then it may be harder to code.
