What Have You Done To Your Car Today? Volume 2

Recommended Posts

Pretty sweet!

In gear grunt's nothing like the 330d, but going through the gears feels close. No steering feel. At all. Gearbox is amazing. I like I need to buy some humble pie towards auto-box owners (although the older ones are different I guess - and I still maintain it's not as fun!).

Lovely inside, switch gear is fantastic, although other bits, like the sunvisors and ash tray lids feel cheaper than the E46. I'll do a proper min-review at some point though.

It's got me seriously considering an upgrade though, although it doesn't make you feel speacial at all like some cars do - it's just a bland rep-mobile to everyone else.

So many nice upgrades over the E46 though - like the ability to change gear without losing the cruise control setting - and the way the CC speed is displayed on a ring around the outside of the speedo etc.

AMAZING sound system too compared to the E46, even after having upgraded mine.

Exactly what i thought when i had the tourer for a month, the leather also doesnt feel as nice i think. Still think there way overpriced for what they are i looked at a 335d with 8k miles on the clock and it was 33k not even a year old it had every option there was going which made it a 50k car new.

Just can justify spending that much on a bit of tin for it to be worthless after a few years. I could only do it if i intended to keep for ever.

Leather sucks anyway - although it's heated, which helps.

I think the only way I could do it is by a lease with the view to buy (HP I guess), but I dunno. If my 330d was costing hundreds to keep on the road then yeah, it would be worth it, but it doesn't. Even if it needs a new turbo and injectors in the same year, those repair bills will likely still be less than a year's worth of lease payments.

It's a case of wanting one, but it's not 'worth' it over my car, which does everything I need. And that money would be better spent on a house deposit/mortgage overpayments than a hunk of metal. If I'd paid off my mortgage then maybe it could be justified...

Yeap just not worth it is it really there already 20k second hand and there not exactly special cars like the m's are

This is what I was thinking. When I started looking for a new car. Parents were telling me to go and buy a new car ( non bmw). I was like:

1. Prefer a bmw. As I like the drive. New ones are expensive.

2. Would have liked the e92 m3. But paying a extra 10k for one. Where I can use that money on a deposit for a house. Plus they are starting to depreciate a lot now.

Just looked - a 15k miles, 2014 420d (SE) is £24,000. A 2013, 25k miles, 420d MSport (same spec as mine seems to be) is £24k. That's some impressive deprication at over 50% of RRP! :o

Edit - maths fail! Just under 50% RRP. I'd guess around 40%?

Don't they have massive turbo issues?

I can see me buying one of those though if the auto-box is as good as the 8 speeder in the 420d (although I doubt it will be)

Think that was the 335i not the D

Boss has the e60 535D, similar box if not the same, and its great but because its only 6speed the economy isnt as good and the ratios are a bit long compared to the new 8speed boxes. Still fooking rapid mind

8 speed is that awesome ZF box I think? Gears are incredibly short in it though, can it doesn't seem to block change, but I guess it helps economy. You don't notice it swapping around anyway.

E61 535d estate, in Msport, with xenons and a dark paint colour - ideal everyday car I think!

Caliper was seized so had the AA replace it under warranty along with the fluid. The garage wanted to replace the discs and pads as part of the job (which weren't covered under the warranty). Don't think they were too happy when they were told not to bother.

The slide pins were covered in muck when I took them out. You'd have thought they'd have given them a clean when they had the caliper off :/

Soooo here's my old shocks after 173k

BMW told me they were fine when I asked them after I had the airbag recall and said its just an old car so expect the odd knock

I took this picture after 2 mins of them being pushed in.

Was just showing my parents the 420d. They like it. Although this was an unexpected twist! Only 4,020 miles too!

There was an ABS warning too, which I didn't photo, and I think one about the brakes too. Speedo (and odometer/cruise control/trip computer) died also.

And, when accelerating, instead of going up a gear, it spat itself into neutral and the revs shot right around the gauge - doesn't seem to have damaged anything, but I was concerned it had over-reved and broken the engine.

I've just been back out to it, and it's a bit better with only SRS, CEL lights. Great advert though...

I have a way with cars, it would seem!

Didn't even do anything either. Just started it and it did that. Only thing I can think off is I looked in the boot, under the carpet to look for a spare wheel, and there's some wiring behind the wheel well, not that I touched it. Don't think it's related though.

Boot trim is really cheap. The floor is just a thin bit of wood with some nasty carpet on it - not the nice double sided liner and a solid wood blank you get in the E46. The side trims over the tool kits feel cheaper than the same piece in my 2000 6N2 Polo. Can see where the accountants are stepping in, sadly.

Must be a day for it, my front right caliper seized today - noticed it while driving down the motorway, so new caliper plus two discs and pads - this car is getting expensive!

I wouldn't mind but tomorrow its booked in the garage to get both pre-cat O2 sensors changed.
