Clubsport Gearknob re-trim

Recommended Posts

This is my first guide so go easy on me and if anyone feels i've missed anything shout out, cheers

First thing is i bought the replacement cover from this guy, he's very god to deal with and will know exactly which one you need when you say the two stitch for the silver base knob.

Equipment used:

  • Fairy liquid
  • Stanley knife
  • Small file
  • Small flat headed screw driver
  • Glass jug for water
  • Hair dryer

On to the gear knob -

1. Remove the badge from the top of the gear knob with a screw driver or similar - mine was past it so i replaced it with 25 11 1 221 613 - cost me £8.21 inc VAT

2. Cut down the stitching of the old cover with a stanley knife

3. Place the hole gear knob in hot/boiling water for a 3-4 minutes - this is to soften the glue that is holding the silver part at the bottom to the gear knob

4. Once removed the silver part will be able to move but be careful as the silver part is soft aluminium so try to use a screw driver with a cloth around or masking tape what ever you choose - i marks the plastic gear knob so had to file smooth again or it will show up through the leather cover.

5. Once the silver part moves the complete cover will come off (some may come off easier around step 2.)

6. At this stage i dropped the new cover into the water to soften for around 2 minutes

7. Smear the gear with fairy liquid (or what ever brand you use ^_^ )

8. Pull the cover on from the bottom

9. Tuck the bottom in between the silver base and the plastic knob and push down hard to trap the cover in

10. Now work the cover up towards the top and tuck in to the top

11. I left it for 30 minutes outside to see if the leather moved once it dried out

12. Tuck the top over and see if the cover needs trimming

13. Trim little bit's at a time and try not to trim over the stitched part as you may risk the stitch coming un-done

14. Tuck over and leave with some weight on - (i used the closest thing to hand, but anything with a bit of weight will do)

15. After a few minutes fit the new badge

16. I got the hair drier out just to dry out the leather

17. The finished item

Yeah he's a top bloke names Greg.

Used him for mine ages ago he made the template for the mtec gear knobs from one I passed on.

Really good fit.

As I've mentioned before on here anyone who wants one just message him about the item he's listing and mention you after the mtec cover instead and he'll sort you out.

I got 1 from him not 100% on it, my org had 3 stitch lines, the new one only has 2, it sort of fits apart from the stitching bits not going into the grooves, but still looks so much better than the old one

Looks like you might have got the clubsport leather but your gearknob is MTec (Standard sport).

Really wanted to do this today, but just tried getting the knob off then remembered it was loose when i test drove it and the dealer said he'd glue it on. Now i've twisted it loads, but want to know is there anything i can break if I twist to much? Any ideas on getting the bugger off!?

will the silver collar remove fully or just slip down to tuck in the bottom bit then tap it back ?

It does remove but takes a little but of effort to get it off.

Removed mine it's held on by glue, if recovering washing up liquid on the gear knob and I warmed leather up in hot water to make it supple.

Small repair and it makes a massive difference.
