318i Cam Position Sensor and CCV DIY

Recommended Posts

today i had to change my camshaft position sensor, crank case vent valve, and my crank case breather hose. i decided i'd take a few pics along the way and hopefully it'll come in handy to others. the following steps worked for me for the 318 model, and i'd say anyone can do this...........very easy and can all be done within an hour.

obviously the engine should be off and had time to cool.

lets start with the camshaft sensor:- (the 318 only has the one sensor, not 2 like other models).

all that is required here is to unplug the cable that connects to it and undo the allen bolt holding it in place.

DIY2.jpg

once its out remove the o-ring as you need to fit it onto the new sensor.........see below, old sensor on left and new one on the right with the o-ring fitted.

DIY1.jpg

fit the new sensor, tighten the allen bolt, plug the cable back in...........job done.

DIY2.jpg

now lets move onto the crank case breather hose and valve:-

start off by removing the pollen tray, it has 3 little thumbscrew points that need to be turned anti-clockwise and then they spring up. they dont come right out. i jumped the gun a little and forgot to take pics of that section, but i'm pretty sure you'll manage without the pics for that bit. once the top section is removed, remove the filter, and this will give you access to the torx screws holding the rest of the filter housing. remove the torx, and then the housing...........it should be looking like this now. (notice the ccv circled, and the breather hose coming off it)

DIY4.jpg

now you can get access to the hose clamps holding the breather hose in place, one on the left hand side (see below), and the other is at the ccv. be careful that you dont let the clamps slip off and fall down into the engine bay as you will be needing them for the new hose.

DIY5.jpg

all you need to do now is pull the rest of the hose off, one end at the rocker cover, and the other at the ccv

DIY3.jpg

old hose and new hose below with the clamps on the new hose ready to be fitted, but before we fit it we must change the ccv. as you can see my old hose snapped, it was in a bit of a mess.

DIY6.jpg

now lets change the ccv. all thats needed here is to remove the 2 allen bolts holding it in place.........a bit fiddly as their under the ccv so be careful not to drop anything when removing them. see below for the old and the new.

DIY7.jpg

and this is what you are left with when the ccv has been removed

DIY8.jpg

fit the new ccv

DIY9.jpg

and then all you need to do is fit the breather hose, making sure its on properly and the clamps are tightened up. refit your pollen filter in reversal of the way in which you removed it................and.................thats it, job done.

can a broken one affect performance? (ccv)

i had to do this a few months ago and my car was taking in far to much air before causing it loss of power hugely and revs very unpredictable. you will know if you need to change it straight away if your still unsure find the hose when the engines cold and give it a squeeze all over the pipes if it is soft in places or there is any erosion on it you will know if you need to change it. if your still not sure plug it in at the stealers and get them to read your fault codes.

ps. if you do need to change the hose make sure you've got skinny wrists or some on with skinny wrists near by as its very fiddly and awkward if you dont like me !
