EGR delete and remap questions

Recommended Posts

Slightly confused with this EGR business. Some people are saying keep it and clean it and other saying dele it.

What are the pros and cons of deleting the EGR?

I've done the swirl flap removal. Car is getting a full service and EGR clean next Saturday.

Regarding the remap; would it be worse to have an EGR or not? Does it effect fuelling or running of a car. Shall I get the EGR mapped out?

I know a decat is to do before but what about FMIC? Is there any need to get one if keeping standard turbo thanks.

Pros = No soot going back into the engine, which in turn = the inlet manifold, ports and valves don't clog-up with horrible sticky tarry stuff, restricting the amount of air going in, and therefore performance. Some of that sticky stuff inevitably ends-up in the sump (because piston rings never seal 100%) contaminating the oil.

Con(s) = Do-gooders will insist you're making a massive contribution to Global Warming - you naughty boy.

As for the mapping/fuelling question, I don't know the answer to that yet. I'd like to talk to a reputable mapper about it, but I never seem to get 'round to it. I've deleted my EGR and it still runs fine with no EML - but mine is a Euro3 engine. AFAIK the Euro4 engines throw the EML if they are run with the EGR disconnected, but they still run fine.

Euro3 etc are emissions standards. Euro4 was applicable to all cars registered Jan '05 onwards, so BMW likely introduced it during the '04 model year. I don't know of a 100% definitive way of easily telling which your car is, but if it's manual transmission and Euro3 it will have a plain EGR pipe from the manifold to the EGR valve, not a box with a coolant pipe running to it.

Just do what i did at first, remove vac hose and plug it with a screw or golf tee.. but now i have removed the full system (egr valve and cooler). Blanked the manifold and capped off coolant pipes :) may aswell clean out the inlet manifold too! Be running a lot cleaner ;)

And definitely do a decat, either first only or order the ecotune downpipe and gut secondary cat... as for FMIC have a look on txautosport where i boughr mine. Great guys and product is very good quality

November 2003 was the change over date on the 320d from euro 3 to 4

Blanked EGR the same as completely removing it?

Sounds good. Gut the secondary cat?

What is the euro all about, if it throws up an engine management light of the EGR is disconnected? If it is getting a map they can map the sensor out of the ecu anyway.

Never heard of cleaning the MAF, any threads?

I removed my egr with a blanking kit.

Cleaning or removing will just let cleaner air into inlet manifold.

Cleaning MAF will increase your mpg if it's not been done before.

Just use electrical contact spray to clean the maf. I don't really look at fuel consumption on mine in that much detail lol. My eml light is on due to the egr delete. But I have a Bluetooth adapter and torque pro app and can clear it, just comes back everytime I start the car lol
