Haha, I'm joking.. No the headunit is on Android 4.2.2 and from what I hear it's pretty much the world is your oyster when it comes to it. I'm yet to get to grips of the OS but Chimp on here is giving me lots of information about it. I plan to root the system soon mainly just to override the stock music app.

You'll get a heck of alot more use out of a rooted android system. The current Tesco Hudl I'm setting up ready for the dash install runs a rooted version of 4.2.2 as well.

If it helps, I use an app called NRGplayer for music (couple of quid for full version). It has a car-friendly user interface and is very customisable. It can also hijack your volume controls etc and re-assign them to do other things like skip to next track. Which is handy for mobile phones when you want to skip tracks without unlocking screen but i suspect your unit has separate volume and track buttons?

Haha! Yeah that's what I keep getting told but I'm unsure of what other benefits I would need/want. Although, for now, everytime I start the unit I have to pause the stock music app and then open Poweramp as I use that - it's not a huge issue its just annoying that I cant use the steering wheel controls to change tracks.

I think I'll have to continue using the unit and see where the flaws are so I know where I want to improve. The old saying of "why fix it when its not broken" springs to mind.

Your custom Tesco Hudi looks interesting - especially as its a budget unit and a custom build. I suppose your build is making better use of the Hudi's hardware? Although I can't imagine its got a brilliant processor...?

You're right. However to counter that phrase, there's always the "why settle for less?" statement too. haha. Rooting your device will allow you to block/remove that annoying app. I think I have some sort of OCD, as just telling me about that music app autostarting already angers me and would make me root just to get rid of it! lol!

As per the Tesco Hudl. It was an impulse purchase 2 weeks ago and wasn't originally my intended tablet (Galaxy Tab being the prefered one as there are better Roms for it). It is slightly slower than I'd have liked but much faster than I expected it to be (especially after removing tesco bloatware etc). I've noticed google maps was a bit sluggish at first but I used a cheeky google maps trick to speed up loading times.

I've a feeling I'll use the Hudl to do most of the install with and at last minute switch to my original plan of a Samsung Galaxy Tab so long as a decent second hand one pops up on ebay.

- The google maps trick, by the way, is to hover over an area (not to large of an area or won't work), so in my case, Greater Manchester, and then seach for "OK Maps" in the search bar at the top. Google Maps then asks you if you would like to cache the current map (including all the lower level data once zoomed in etc). So now the Hudl has a local copy of my entire area, it's much faster at loading the maps and just uses it's data connection to check traffic.

Thats fair enough. As I say, that's the reason I want to root the unit I assume the Hudi is a similar size to the galaxy?

One thing that swings in favour of the Hudl is the central positioned 'face' camera. I was hoping to be able to drill a small hole central in the double din surround to allow the camera to see into the car. Would make for a smart security feature! but not that important i guess.

Let me know if you need any help once you come to root the device. I've no experience rooting that thing you have, but I have plenty in terms of Android devices in general! Happy to help!

Quick General Update

The car is currently at BMW Stockport having the airbag recall sorted. Should be picking it back up in the next couple of hours (I hope!).

Just had brake pads and rear discs delivered to hopefully fit over the weekend. The current rear's are super pitted and the pads all round are quite slim now too. I want to get all this sorted and then get the car on Collies next month after it's back from it's MOT as a present for passing (if it passes, that is!)

Noticed a slight screeching noise coming from the engine bay on a cold start recently after replacing the DISA valve. Wondering if it's the timing chain or needing tightening or something. I've hardly any experience with that sort of thing though so looks like I'll have to go and find a few decent DIYs.


Tablet I.C.E Build Update

I've ordered the required parts now, I think I've got everything i need to eventually fit it to the car which means the next stage is getting all the rules right for how I want the system to run. Here's a (slightly detailed) list of all the features my I.C.E will have....

• OEM influenced boot screen triggered to display upon car ignition on/off

  • If tablet is charging, wake device and trigger boot screen

  • If tablet stops charging, trigger boot screen and lock device

• Automatic syncing of media files (pulled from dropbox, stored locally on SD card)

  • If car ignition is off (device not charging) and Home or Work WiFi is detected, then connect and sync media if there are changes. Switch off wifi once completed. Always halt syncing if device battery is below 20%. (advantage of using local media storage is no connection loss driving through tunnels etc like you’d get when streaming music)

• Check traffic on regular routes

  • If the current day is a weekday (mon-fri) and my current location is Home or Work, then display latest traffic data relating to my commute to/from Work. however, if there is an entry within my Google Calendar labelled “off work”, than do nothing.

• Send location targets to easily trigger sat nav

  • Within google maps on my phone (rooted Galaxy S5), hitting ‘share’ allows me to send target location to the car tablet. Navigation to the target is then triggered the upon next ignition start.

  • If someone texts my phone a postcode, followed by the correct secret password, it is automatically sent to the tablet triggering the navigation app the next time the car has been started.

• Driver Checking

  • If car ignition on (tablet charging), send command to phone for it to switch on its Bluetooth. Wait 30 seconds. If Tablet can connect to Phone via Bluetooth the driver is authenticated. If Phone is not detected, send alert to phone that the car has been started.

  • If ‘Guest Driver’ setting on Phone is active, Phone will override tablet’s security check when ever it requests Bluetooth to be turned on.

• Security System

  • If car ignition has been on for longer than 3 minutes and driver has not been successfully authorised. Trigger ‘silent alarm mode’ and send GPS coordinates of car (via email) every 5 minutes.

  • If car ignition has been switched off, but ‘silent alarm mode’ has been activated. Send GPS location (via email) every 30 minutes (to preserve battery life as much as possible, all data/wifi will be turned off in between sending location)

  • If battery of tablet is lower than 20%, send GPS location of car (via email) every hour and do not wake tablet (when car ignition is on) until battery is above 25% again.

Cheers guys. As I said in original post, things have been done before so I'm hoping I can apply some of my more unique expertise to the car so it stands out a bit.

I'm already planning a way to make the car interactive at meets/shows too. Something along the lines of texting answers to questions and making the angel eye headlights flash with correct answers! Haha.

Morning! Update time

Had a few deliveries this week...

New rear discs and front/rear pads. Not fitted yet, the bank holiday weekend was a rainy right off.

Started to hear some funny noises from drivers side rear wheel too now which i suspect is the wheel baring. So I might just get a garage to pop the new discs on for during a baring replacement anyway!

After a few people were raving about 303 Aerospace spray I purchased some and Love the results. It's brought my interior to life and I've now started on the engine bay.

Some new pressed plates and a slidy centre console thingy bought from fellow zoner Gravy.

Biggest reason for the new plates was due to the massive block capital letter "STOCKPORT CAR SUPERMARKET" written under the reg which looked so tacky!

-Old plates. were on wonky! highly annoying.

-New plates

And finally, I've started to prep ready for the install of Halo lights using a transistor and a couple of diodes.

If it works out as it did during my prototyping, I should be able to get the halo's to fade up/down and stay on as DRLs.

Has anyone ever wired the numberplate lights to internals so they fade in/out with unlock/lock?

I'm thinking about doing it along with some angels. Not sure of it would look daft or not!

Lots of people have done it mate, they usually wire the angels up to the positive cable for the footwell lights. Only thing is they come on when you open the doors too but with you wanting them as DRLs i wouldn't expect that to be much of a problem mate.
