negev
These look interesting: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Performance-Chip-Tuning-Box-OBD2-BMW-3-E46-330i-330-Ci-231-BHP-PETROL-REMAP-/171664464534?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item27f7ffda96 has anyone played with one of these? I'd love to see dyno results before/after..

negev
hmmmm interesting indeed. Fancy being the guneapig? No chance It promises hp gains of "up to 35%" and torque gains of "up to 25%", both of which would have to violate the laws of physics to be achievable with software alone. If it safely made torque gains of 5-7% it'd be worth considering, but the key word there is 'safely' - if they're bulls**tting about the power gains they could also be bulls**tting about how it's not going to wreck your engine. On the other hand, if it can be verified that there are hundreds or thousands of customers who've been using it for years without damaging their engine and the before/after dyno graphs show gains then I'd consider it, but there's no way I'm going to be one of the first Borg that get wiped out so the rest can be ok
Jay.
Looks like your on your own then as I've never seen one of these in 9 years of being on the forum!
TriggerFish
These are very much a case of buyer beaware! There are good ones out there (DTUK get a good rep. in lots of circles), but there's also cheap ones that are just a resistor wired inline with one of the sensors to induce overfuelling. troublesome84
Not sure how they work with petrol cars, but I used to test similar stuff on a diesel passat and all they did was just skipping the ECU mapping for the engine and injecting a modified map. I.E. the B5 passats had the same 1,9 tdi engine with 90hp, 110hp and 130 hp. The only modification that needed to be done was to increase the power in the ECU to change it to a "higher power model". They did seem to work, but it' a generic map and I'm affraid that the amounts shown on the gains are a bit over the top.

Well, according to the blurb on the page it adjusts itself to the car over time. NA cars don't have turbos so you don't get the same +50hp just by cranking up the turbo boost. Rob-
Going to spew the usual line of 'it's not worth doing on a non turbo petrol'. Because it really isn't unless you've got a lot of other modifications. Even then you're going to want a tailored map. Best thing you can do to an NA car is fit a nitrous kit Edited June 19, 2015 by Rob- autosri

Because it really isn't unless you've got a lot of other modifications. I had my old 316 remapped by jason, that was worth it. Much improvement in drivability. I suspect an ebay tuning box is going to be nowhere near as good as an expertly tuned custom map though.
Rob-
True. I can see the appeal of the eBay boxes for an old tdi that's on the verge of scrap though, just for a bit of fun if anything.

Sonar Daddy
wouldn't trust this tbh.....as said only way to get stated, power gains quoted from a stock N/A engine is to add CAI....uprated manifold, streight through large bore exhast,ect....then get it "live" mapped with an experienced mapper on a dyno....this thing seems to f**k about with the stock map across most parameters....f**king about with the cam angle`s without seeing "live feedback" on whats going on is stupid on an N/A engine........is this... Silver Streek
I have a box on mine, its from DPT - Diesel Power Tuning http://www.dieselandpetroltuning.co.uk/it does work really well on my 320d. It pulls better at lower revs so more torque, plus is more revvy so more power too. Noticeably faster when you boot it. Also which was unexpected is that it idles much more smoothly and quietly. These were designed by ex F1 engineers and do have a good reputation, hence the price. Wouldn't touch and ebay cheapy with a barge pole. If you are planning it for a petrol, I would maybe consider a live map instead you might get more bang for your buck and better results giving you a more driveable car.
