320d Flywheel + friends

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Had the engine out last weekend to drop in a new block thanks to swirl flap issues, Everything is going well, other than a couple of things. Before you read them it's worth nothing that I'm kind of a cheap bastard so If I can get away with spending money I'll take that opportunity. That said, if the cost cutting is dangerous I am willing to spend the money.

Issue 1:

We took the engine out with the gearbox still attached. As we dismantled it we found that the DM flywheel (2.5 years old) has a bit of play in it. I'm wondering how much play is acceptable as I'm really hoping I don't need to replace it already. At the moment the play is about 5-7 degrees rotation. The car drove fine before with no issues so could this discovery be a blessing in disguise or is it nothing to worry about?

Issue 2: Turns out that one of the engine mounts was completely ripped off. Looks like this isn't a new thing and that it's been like it probably since I bought the car. Worth getting another one or is there a bonding glue that will work just as well?

Issue 3: On removal of the engine there was some collateral damage in the form of the water pre-heater. Can this be bypassed, repaired or do I need to get a new one?

Issue 4: ERG delete, figure may as well go ahead on this since the block is out. Its a 04 engine so I know I'll need to get it mapped after but my question is, Does blocking the vac hose with a screw work just as well as some of the kits you can buy to blank the whole system?

Issue 5: Best way to clean the inlet manifold of all the s**t inside it? it's literally caked in soot/solid oil

Cheers in advance

4. Really worth blanking the whole thing. This means a delete kit, they are cheap enough on eBay. Also, if you feel like it remove all of the EGR thermostat and pipework. There is a write up in the DIY section. You need an exhaust blanking plate and 2 silicone covers for the coolant hoses but all the details are in the writeup.

5. Soak it in anything degreaser, preferably something like engine degreaser. Probably get something like a drain brush to scrub with.

1. I'm not 100 sure but If it drove fine before i'd leave it.

2. Deffo replace the engine mount!

3. Replace the heater.

4. Replace with a proper EGR bypass as it's less restrictive. But not absolutely necessary.

5. Soak in degreaser then suit up and scrub it clean! Be warned - you'll probably just be transferring the soot from the manifold to you though.. :P
