2004 e46 320d no power untill 2500k [FIXED]

Recommended Posts

to cut a long story short a swirl flap got sucked into the engine so i have completely repaired everything it damaged, i.e new valves, piston, turbo. engine runs a dream apart from no boost untill 2500k i know its not the new turbo as before i realized it needed a new turbo i tried the car with the old turbo and noticed the same thing nothing untill 2500k where as before the flap got sucked in and i had took it apart it was just after 2000k but since i have put everything back together it dosnt go untill 2500k, i had fault code for maf so i have replaced this and still no difference, apart from that there are no other codes

new turbo?

Your profile says 330ci?

Usually though, once swirlflaps have been sucked in, that's it, engine is done. But check for boost leaks, split pipes, blocked EGR and swirlflap actuator error codes.

yeah i have a 330ci and 320d :) once the swirl flap had been sucked in i had to replace 4 valves and the piston. i have used smoke and sealed my mouth round the intake pipe to the manifold and it is holding pressure well i have also done the same on all the vacuum lines and they also seem to be holding pressure well, i have scanned for fault codes about 5 mins ago and there are no codes at all, some people say turbo could be faulty but when i had the old turbo on after i repaired the engine and it was coming in at 2500k as well so i think the turbo is fine, it used to come in around 2k-2.2k ish before everything happened i just cant understand it and i have checked everything just to make sure i didnt miss anything once i put everything back together

This ^^^ :(

the engine its self seems to be running as smooth as its ever been if you put your foot down half way its as if you can feel like a valve or something open at around 2600ish then it just takes off, i just couldnt imagine there been anything internal that could cause this but i might be wrong

The other thread on this subject is here. You could try contacting the OP of that thread and asking how he got (or is getting) on with his car. Post 7 is interesting, from yet another person with a 320d that ingested flap(s).

it is just strange the power is there all the way from 2500k to 4200k pulls hard in every gear there is the odd tiny tiny flat spot but nothing that wasnt there before and feels just as fast its just the lag before the turbo comes in thats not right,

i noticed a few people say the new maf needs reprogramming i am just wondering with it been a new turbo and new maf it might need programmed to sort it out there is a bmw specialist near me i will call down tomorrow and see if he has any ideas and see if he thinks it needs recoding

For me it was blocked egr and a failing swirl flap actuator.

Both easy fixes. Remove egr and clean out, and just unplug the swirl flap actuator.

Went to a Bmw Specialiat today and he said it was possibly not boosting untill 2500rpm because of the swirl flaps been removed not sure if anyone else has had the same once removed

Nope.

still stuck as to what it can be then :( undear the manifold there is a sensor in the head not sure if this is the same plug as the vacuum for the swirl flap actuator if so and i plugged them in wrong would i get a fault code for it

Did you get the new turbo coded in, as far as I have always read a new turbo needs coding in.

Also it should start boosting from about 1500 revs, mine does, not loads of power but you can hear it spooling up. My turbo is VERY noisy so I can hear it well.

When I took the swirl flaps out it made no difference to the turbo spooling up neither can I think of a reason it would.

Hope this helps.

Can anyone confirm that new turbos need to be coded in??

I am still no further forward with mine been at a Bmw Specialiat for the last 2 days solid both trying to work out what it is I can hear it spool at 1500rpm but lacks loads of power then takes off at 2500rpm have just put a new map sensor in and still no diffrence and I don't think the turbo needs coded I am going to loosed the exhaust off the turbo tomorrow and make sure the cats not starting to block up if not then where I bought the turbo from said they will test it to make sure it's set up and functioning as it should I just can't think of anything else I have tried all the vacuums changed the map and maf checked all the I take and inter cooler pipes for leaks and nothing there it feels as if something like a valve is opening at 2500 rpm then just lets the car take off its strange

I have electronic actuator does that mean I only have 1 pressure converter for the egr also the best way to describe it is below 2500rpm if you use quarter or full throttle it makes no diffrence and the mpg won't drop below 30mpg it's as if it's not getting full throttle untill 2500rpm
