320d warm/hot start issues

Recommended Posts

ive had some hot/warm start issues for a while now, and after a search on the web i thought (hoped) it could be the Glow Plug Relay. So i took my car into a local garage and had the fault codes read which gave the following answers:

4222-Glow plug cyclinder 2 activation

4B90-Rail Pressure Monitoring on Engine Start

4630-Rail Pressure Plausibility Delivery Controlled

which they then cleared and tested again after restarting, only the "4B90-Rail Pressure Monitoring on Engine Start" remained.

the garage owner said he was familiar with these engines as they are also in freelanders and before he tested it the symptoms pointed towards an injector problem (which i was hoping was not the case) and after the codes he thinks this to still be the issue.

He is asking for 3 hours labour to remove the injectors, then he will send them off to be tested at £25 per injector then replacements could be £100-150 each, then another 3 hours labour to refit them. plus a new glow plug for cylinder 2. Now my issue is that the car is only really worth about 1200-1500 when fully working and he estimates around £500-600 if only one injector needs replacing. plus the mot is due later in the year and i think a few bushes need replacing etc. so more £££ will need throwing at it then too.

I have considered breaking it for parts as it has full heated leather and widescreen nav, all straight panels, spare winter steels etc but i dont have the time or the space.

Is it worth fixing? or if one injector has gone, are the other 3 likely to follow?

its an auto with 94k and a tuning box if that makes any difference?

I have a similar problem too. Same £ vs. value situation. My pikey solution is to unplug the fuel rail pressure sensor which then forces the car into starting. Not elegant, but it works. Might be worth trying to see if it works? As it did work for me, I wired a switch into the cabin to 'unplug' the sensor without having to physically mess around with it.

i have wondered if the "tuning box" that was on the car when i bought it, might be effecting the fueling? i'm not clued up on stuff like that but dont they just increase the fuel pressure rather than actually remap the car?

i'm not sure i would be comfortable wiring a switch to ignore the problem as one way or another this car is going to have to be sold soon anyway. i've been offered a 12 plate astra for a very good price so need to sell to fund that now. but its just the gamble of fixing it just to sell it, or sell it as spares/repairs.

get rid of the tuning box,you have said exactly what they do raise fuel pressure and just dump more fuel in,a proper tailored map for ya car is way better, the mapper should mcheck state of ya turbo, injectors and keep torque to a safe level as to not destroy ya clutch/dmf etc

i guess it wont be helping mpg either, it is quite pokey but i've only ever driven it with the box on but i guess the standard 150 bhp will be plenty. i guess the extra fuel pressure wont have done the injectors much good. I'll remove it (if i can do it myself) and maybe flog it on for some extra £££

ps its an auto but it wont be doing it any good

yeh,ive had experience with them i had one fitted to a mg zt cdti which have 320d bmw engine, then when i got it mapped properly by a very experienced guy called brian,he explained everything, this guy wrote the map for the mg ,its pretty well known on the mgzt forum, thye have come  abit furtber with developing the tuning boxes but i still wouldnt fit one over a proper remap, the boxes are easy to remove, they will only have two plugs, one for the maf sensor and one for the fuel sensor.

thats my next job for the weekend then...

so basically they just adjust the fuel and air for more punch? ... if thats the case i dont see how they can increase mpg too?

i'll whip it out and stick it on fleabay.

Does anyone have any thoughts on my fault codes? i'm still in two minds whether to have the injectors removed and sent off for testing as that will be £400 down the drain if they arnt at fault and i'm back to square one!
