I had a nightmare extracting the oil out of my s/c ended up syphoning it out by mouth which was nasty nasty and the tool shown above would do the job very nicely. How many of you used the Redline oil, and is it really that much better than another good brand of oil? Just struggling to justify the postage cost of £15 to N.Ireland for some Redline ATF from Opie opposed to dropping into my local shop and buying some!! On my 330d the fill is on the drivers side of the gearbox casing, and the drain is right on the bottom below the fill. I found both the be 17mm hex (male). I removed the fill bung first and then the drain, and no more than a cupfull came out! I swear the gearbox was running pretty much dry, and it took nearly 2 litres to fill...sealed for life eh BMW? How much of the REDLINE D4 ATF would i need for a 325ci manual gearbox seeing as its 5 speed? Not sure but I think it has something to do with colder temperatures during winter. I spoke with Opie Oils for a recommendation and have gone with Redline MTL as recommended. Rebel Posted May 5, 2013 Report Share Posted May 5, 2013 Changed both today, took me an hour taking my time (including the golf tee mod). Digging around the web a little more it turns out that the recommendation for D4ATF relates to extreme temperatures (cold) in parts of the US. In very cold climes MTL can be a little too thick resulting in stiffer gear shifts until the oil is warm. D4ATF is thinner than MTL and helps with this issue but being thinner isn't as protective MTL at higher temps or other applications such as racing. The general concensus for Europe is MTL (if using Redline) as recommended by other areas of the US and Opie Oils in the UK. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Opted for the Redline MTL for the gearbox and 75w90 in the diff. Considering doing CDV delete. Great DIY post thanks just a little pic.... Transmission fluid was so black when drained, its a must do if not done yet and having slight problems with gear change. Real test is winter.
