mattbull86
Hi Guys, I'm fairly new to the forum and have just bought a 330ci (going to get some pics up soon). I'm over the moon with it but have a slight concern with a noise it makes. When switching off the engine, it (or something under the bonnet) seems to almost rattle to a stop, its the only time you can hear the noise and the engine seems to drive and sound perfect all the other time. Is this normal with this engine or does anyone know what it could be? Thanks
MattBMW
Welcome to the ZONE! first m8 I'd listen to where the sound is coming from in the engine bay. Get some help isolating it. It could be your fan first m8 check if fan blade centre aint loose.....just a hunch... failing that get the diagonsed just in case there are some codes registered on the ECU. simonlpearce
Could also be normal something to do with oil cooler valves opening closing perhaps cant remember the exact name of these things, im sure someone will be along shortly to correct my my lack in technical jargon! mattbull86
Thanks for the suggestions guys I have checked the fan and it isn't that. I don't think its normal as its quite loud and doesnt sound good It is quite hard to isolate where it is coming from but could be sort of under the engine towards the rear of the engine bay. Any further suggestions would be appreciated, if not I will have to get it looked at I think!
MattBMW
try up loading a vid clip of it...that way it maybe easier to diagnose if someone may have already experienced it before.
BadzMaru
I've experienced this before in my old car BMW 330... I queried it with BMW Dealer and they say its normal but I hated the noise. I didn't have trouble with it though and I only driven the car for 9 months before decided to upgrade to the M3... Even with the M3 I do hear the same noise too but not as loud as the 330 though and I've had my M3 for 2 years now, hope that helps...

Thats reassuring if its normal thanks and it didnt cause any problems. I will still get a vid on here later on today though to see how it compares to yours (or your old 330) and see if any other people have similar noises. mattbull86
Here is a vid of the engine, few revs, then idle then switch off. You can here the noise when shutting down. Another thing I noticed was it only does this when shutting the car off with the clutch out. If the clutch is depressed there is no noise when switching the engine off. I'm guessing this means its transmission related? What you guys think, anyone got/had similar noises? And is it normal or should I be worrying? Thanks in advance 330ci engine shut down rattle
ljc8165
It sounds like a belt is loose mate and making a noise as it comes to a halt. I may be totally wrong but thats what it sounds like???

ljc8165
Or it could be your exhaust loose at the manifold or a retaining clip busted off causing it to hit against summat. Someone will know but prob tomorrow now........
Mikey
IMO that's not normal as I've never heard my one do that since owning it from new.
mattbull86
Right, done loads of digging on this topic today, found lots of threads on other forums etc. All of them seem to say its normal and is something to do with either the dual mass flywheel or gearbox input shaft and hence doesnt do it with the clutch depressed. This sound reasonable? I'm slightly happier about this noise knowing that other people have experienced it but with no further issues. However it doesnt explain why only some people experince this?? If anyone else experiences similar noises this may put your mind at rest! 330 engine rattle on shut off

Gadoosh!
Same noise on mine when switching off engine. Didn't know depressing the clutch makes a difference tho I will try that next time
Cwality83
Sorry to dig up an old topic, but its a current topic for me, so i might aswell use it instead of making a new one. I too have this dual mass rattle when the engine is shutdown on my 2003 6 speed 330Ci. If i depress the clutch when i turn off the igntion at the same time, then the rattle goes away, so it is the same problem as the OP. Now, whilst i am not overly worried about it, i hear it is a fairly common problem and BMW have been made aware of it and say its normal, i still don't like it. The car has done 100k and i am going to get the clutch done soon, so am tempted to install a new LuK DMF at the same time. Does anyone here know if a new flywheel will resolve that rattle on shutdown? As obviously this noise was not around when it was brand new, and has just developed overtime. Thanks, Steve. Hi, I'm new to the forum and have a similar problem with my wife's e46 320d (or tractor as I like to call it!) I have the same rattle on start up as per the above video clip and less of a rattle on switch off. Does anyone know if it's likely to be the same problem? I'm petrified to take it to BMW to get it checked. I was planning on going on holiday this year! Sorry for adding more questions and no answers Bryan

BEN139
This noise is defo normal. My facelift 53 plate makes this noise but i also bought one almost new back in 2003(it was around 6months old) and that one also did it. Nothing to worry about.
