Subframe Issues

No it's utterly crap to be honest, 530i is a nice step up though mate

Oh it's not a step up. I'm on my 2nd 530i Sport in 4 years. I only bought this e46 as it was cheap. It's my first after a string of e39's (3), e30's (still have one of those), e34's (2) and e36's(3). I've been in a BMW since Sept 1996.

But when it comes to the e46, I simply cannot understand how BMW got it so wrong! They are such a pretty car and drive well but all this bootfloor nonsense is ridiculous  .

Hi, I think I have the dreaded subframe/floor shearing problem!!... I have qa horible deep clunk when shifting/coming off throttle.... my cars a lowered 328 so a prime candidate!! .... Im based in Manchester... I wonder if anyone can advise where I could get this done, and what Im likely to pay (given that a 99 328 isnt worth that much anymore anyway so budget is important!!) thanks for any advice!

Ive looked under and it looks liek the rear nearside has been repaired in the past, so its hard to tell if any fresh cracks....the bushes look quite shot though...ive bought a subframe and new bushes but im not sure i can do it myself anyway for starters, and, my worry is i get it all off and find these cracks then im stuck with an immobile car on the drive!!...

Does anyone know the best way about getting BMW to check your car and do you have to pay for the inspection if they find nothing wrong with your car?

If your car is under 10 yrs old i.e.10 yrs from date of first registration then there should be no charge regardless (for investigation or repair).

Just give them a ring and get it booked in. Bear in mind though that if the car has been in a dink around that general area and they get a sniff of it they may try and wriggle out of a free warranty repair should a repair be required. Can't honestly say what the deal would be for a car over 10yrs old. Both mine are on an '03 and I took them to BMW Shrewsbury in Feb and they got the all clear - no charge.

What's the registered date of yours? If it is over 10 years I suggest going to an independent specialist as BMW will more than likely want to charge if it gets a clean bill of health. All you can do is pose the question I guess....

Awesome!

The build date of mine is December 2003 (53 plate) so i'm within the 10 years.

Going to give Rybrook Warwick a ring tomorrow.

Will let everyone know the outcome.

Yup. I just walked in & they did It no problem

In other words they stuck it on a ramp, got a torch out, had a bit of a prod and poke, grunted a bit and came back with the conclusion 'yeh thats ok'

I'd be getting it checked by someone who knows what they are doing/looking for before taking it to BMW.

^this - last one I repaired the crack wasnt visible until you had dropped the subframe and removed the underseal from the offending area.

yeah, this was my concern so i got them to do me a printout of the inspection they'd carried out, as security. I'm not as daft as you think Lee boy ;)

What would this of achieved though as they would just have turned round and said 'at such a date there were no cracks' - it's hardly going to stop it cracking a week, 6 months, a year later is it.

Id say if i'd had an inspection, then drove to Gary's on the same day for him to find cracks, i'm sure that bowker, to hide their embarrasment would sort the issue FOC, wouldnt you?

Ah well, was worth a try! Just like you say when the engineer come back after a worryingly short amount of time, i just wanted something in my hand as a sort of 'guarantee' if you will.

Just spoken to Rybrook Warwick and BMW GB and they both said there is a inspection fee and if there is anything found Rybrook would have to apply to BMW GB for a warranty refund. They said there was no known recall for this problem for my specific car.

They will not check the car for free.
