Butterfly valve exhaust mod

Recommended Posts

I thought the 320, 325 and 330 all had the same exhaust...so why no valve in the 325?? :(

Does this mean it sounds the same as a 330 if someone has done the golf tee mod to keep the valve open???

Did this the week after i bought my 330ci. I think it does make a noticeable difference to the noise, especially at idle. It now sounds like there is a something under the bonnet and that its not a 1.8 lol

just done this to mine, it was so stuck shut that i have totally removed it by hitting it that hard lol, so mine is permently open, there was alot of soot and stuff behind it so im going to be a bit dirty for a few hundred miles i guess, seems to burble a bit more at idle though,

With the engine off the valve will be open. Engine on = vacuum. Vacuum = shut. And vice versa.

The valve will then open at high revs, speed should have nothing to do with it.

Well, after reading this thread I thought I'd check to see if my valve actually moved, surprise surprise, it was stuck solid!

I gave it a few taps, and then a few harder taps and it was so jammed up that the butterfly actually bent backwards, leaving the left-hand side in place. I managed to solve this by smacking the join from the spindle to the valve until it actually came off, then I was able to extract it with some long-nosed pliers. Just thought I'd post this incase anyone else got stuck this way!

Just done mine :)

Valve was moving freely. My 330 Ci has 80k on the clock but it was converted to LPG around 20k so the exhaust pipes are pretty clear of soot, grime and crap (LPG doesn't have all the impurities and crud that petrol has in it). Popped the hose off, inserted a self-tapper and nipped it up, tucked the hose away under the rear bumper. Job done.

Fired the car up and blipped the throttle just a tad to be greeted by overrun gurgle and crackle.

I'm still smiling :) :) :)

Does anyone know if this works for a diesel engine....Im too lazy to walk out the office and check the downturned pipes for the time being.

Not sure it will even sound good on a diesel engine

to be honest you wont tell any difference with a diesel, even with a small back box, only way to get noise from them is decat and straight through etc before anyone says owt, i have owned a diesel and do know

Damo is right, on our 1 series derv we dont even have a backbox, just stainless pipe running to staggered tips, and it sounds the same as it did before (ice cream van), my 330ci on the other hand sounds the nuts :punk:

Well I guess I cant have it all....looks, performance & mpg will have to do for now.

I'll have to sacrifice sound.

I use (boast about) the term mpg loosely....in my diesel im currently averaging 25-26mpg on a good day

#30+ mpg would be wishful thinking
