RickyZ
Curiosity!!! !!!, and cant make sense of that drawing. Fair enough, im sure with enough time on realOEM you could figure it out, however if your just gonna disconnect it why bother lol
Jag_D7
I thought the 320, 325 and 330 all had the same exhaust...so why no valve in the 325?? Does this mean it sounds the same as a 330 if someone has done the golf tee mod to keep the valve open???
autosri
When I had the inlet manifold off I saw the vac reservoir it's buried in the depths of the engine
Jag_D7
When I had the inlet manifold off I saw the vac reservoir it's buried in the depths of the engine was this for the 325?

autosri
As trickster says I have a 330 the info was more for the people further up who want to remove it all together
jamle
Did this the week after i bought my 330ci. I think it does make a noticeable difference to the noise, especially at idle. It now sounds like there is a something under the bonnet and that its not a 1.8 lol
cdodds2004
just done this to mine, it was so stuck shut that i have totally removed it by hitting it that hard lol, so mine is permently open, there was alot of soot and stuff behind it so im going to be a bit dirty for a few hundred miles i guess, seems to burble a bit more at idle though,
Cannockwolf
when the car is off should the valve be closed? mines open
autosri
When the car is off it should be open I think mate
RickyZ
AFAIK it should only be open at high speed, all other times it should be closed.
Jonny
With the engine off the valve will be open. Engine on = vacuum. Vacuum = shut. And vice versa. The valve will then open at high revs, speed should have nothing to do with it.
chris_328i
Well, after reading this thread I thought I'd check to see if my valve actually moved, surprise surprise, it was stuck solid! I gave it a few taps, and then a few harder taps and it was so jammed up that the butterfly actually bent backwards, leaving the left-hand side in place. I managed to solve this by smacking the join from the spindle to the valve until it actually came off, then I was able to extract it with some long-nosed pliers. Just thought I'd post this incase anyone else got stuck this way!
steuk
Either im looking in the wrong place or mine hasn't got this valve... Intact im sure I've not got it. Gutted as I needed this deeper tone lol. Excellent link though
Jim27
Just done mine Valve was moving freely. My 330 Ci has 80k on the clock but it was converted to LPG around 20k so the exhaust pipes are pretty clear of soot, grime and crap (LPG doesn't have all the impurities and crud that petrol has in it). Popped the hose off, inserted a self-tapper and nipped it up, tucked the hose away under the rear bumper. Job done. Fired the car up and blipped the throttle just a tad to be greeted by overrun gurgle and crackle. I'm still smiling :)
Melv1958
It appears my 325 m sport doesnt even have them, and cant see an acuator either
Shabaza
Does anyone know if this works for a diesel engine....Im too lazy to walk out the office and check the downturned pipes for the time being. Not sure it will even sound good on a diesel engine
Melv1958
to be honest you wont tell any difference with a diesel, even with a small back box, only way to get noise from them is decat and straight through etc before anyone says owt, i have owned a diesel and do know
muly
Damo is right, on our 1 series derv we dont even have a backbox, just stainless pipe running to staggered tips, and it sounds the same as it did before (ice cream van), my 330ci on the other hand sounds the nuts Melv1958
Shabaza
Well I guess I cant have it all....looks, performance & mpg will have to do for now. I'll have to sacrifice sound. I use (boast about) the term mpg loosely....in my diesel im currently averaging 25-26mpg on a good day #30+ mpg would be wishful thinking
muly
lol shabaza, i'm the opposite, i cant wait to get rid of the 1er the sound of of derv has got to me to much and i will gladley sacrifice the mpg for a decent sound, its the 1st and last diesel in our house lol Melv1958
Melv1958
i had a astra vxr turbo with a 3 inch turbo back popped and banged like a shotgun, sold that for a astra mk5 1.9 cdti derv had it 2 months and got the bmw straight 6 petrol, best thing i ever did :-)
Shabaza
I think i got the best of both worlds (minus idling sound) Straight six diesel purrs when im attacking the accelerator pedal
