Jom Coilovers - Warning!!!

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm no expert, but the roll bar kinda rotates on the arb bushes and the length of the drop link should have little effect to a point (as long as it's long enough). i.e. it works by torsional forces, one pulling the other up via the drop link.

With further thought... I reckon you were running too low with those drop links and you *possibly* hadn't done up that securing bolt tight enough.

I'd be interested to see a picture of the distance between the arb and the surrounding components when dropped - if anyone has any? Is it possible for the ARB to hit the inner wing panel if the car is low enough? If that's possible then no wonder the drop link bracket got pulled off!

yes adam - there the ones i now have - much better than the ebay ones that are shorter.

there 14cm bolt to bolt - 16cm end to end if you like.

when chris and i fitted the 'short' ones we had to pull the roll bar back and updwards with some force to get everything to bolt up and chris commented that they may be to short at the time.

with the car on the ground you'll never get a camera anywhere near that point on my car - sorry - however i didn't have to pull on the roll bar to fit these - it just slotted into place nicely and as i say car drives much better now.

as people have said - i think i didn't tighten the bottom bolt enough - this combined with uber short droplinks meant everything was under mega stress under lock and something was eventually going to let go

also point worth mentioning - when i fitted the new droplink - i fitted another nut on the drop link that goes through the shock before the thread goes through the strut as it where - this seemed to ease the angle that the droplinks were 'pulled over by' leaving them more upright as per stock setup.

i can take pics at the weekend when i change the wheels if required.

Nate that pin is a locator pin, thats it. My new coilovers never even had them, as it gives you extra scope to position the struts. If it moved it must have been lose, or the integrity of the strut was shot. Saying that when i sold mine, both side had corroded away, but i never had any issues like this.

Pretty sure the KW's dont have this either. Do them up tighter next time :):D:)

Trouble is, one is £200 and one is £850 ish. And if i had £850 at the time i would have got Eibachs, well actually would of got HSD's, as i dont rate eibachs all that well. Very good but a lot more for your money with HSD coilovers :(

But its your money ;)

I suspect a case of not tightening a bolt correctly here from reading all the responses. Its easy enough to do, god knows how many times i have got into my car and gone to drive off only to realise i forgot to tighten the wheel nuts...the last time of which was as i was pulling from the pits on a track day! Thank f*** i realised before id gone more than 2ft!

a very interesting read an good info to know but as said before by the OP couls have been any number of things but they are cheap for what is a major component in a car.....i will now have to have a think about whether these are worth avoiding or what

A lot of people run them without problems dude it just depends how u drive mainly lol

I just worry how they can be making a good enough profit to sell them at £200. How are they saving so much money compared to other coilovers?

Ah this is a good point however they could have deals in place, bulk buys etc

Or it could just be cheaper parts as is your concern lol

same with anything though gaz your paying for a brand name

i bought a retro adidas flower t shirt with a tiny printed adidas logo on the left breast...cost me £40

bought the same type of t shirt (copy) in a different colour in cyprus for 10 euros but the tshirt is the same grade GSM etc

washes just as well as original but it doesnt have the adidas lables in it B)

i dont think personally the difference between the £200 and £600+ coilovers in just from being made with better parts....partly yes but a massive degree of that is paying for the brand name

i also bought a pair of snide converse chuck taylors in thailand for equivalent of a tenner and here they are £40 give or take....look exactly the same ever wear the same and i still have them now....normally i dont buy copied stuff but needed them when travelling last winter but if you buy them from converse they charge 4 times as much......because they can...they are obviously produced at a similar price thats how other companies can afford to make profits on small margins...

I agree with you on the clothes front but can't agree on this im afraid..

The difference in price wiill be materials the items aer made out of (e.g: alloys instead of mild steel etc..) and the amount of engineering gone into them in the background. Cheaper ones may be hand-welded and more expensive items laser welded with ultimate precision etc.. Also the more expensive ones will have been R&D'd to the hilt to be the best they can be.

The cheaper ones will probably be something like "we've found the settings other companies use, lets copy it as best we can".

Personally i'd pay the price for something more reliable and better developed.

i agree with you to a certain degree momo but i still maintain that £400+ difference is not just down to parts. its all down to branding you will always pay more for a branded name than a brand that has established itself as a budget alternative

i havent completely ruled them out as there are also positive reviews the same as anything. B)
