Engine Whistle - Intake Boot

Recommended Posts

OMG YES! Finally I've found an explanation for what this horrible whistle is. I always get a fairly audible one when I cold start the engine (usually occurs when the RPM's fall down to idle after the initial jump). Super annoying! I also happens while driving sometimes, usually when letting off like the OP.

You can hear the one I experience in this video.

OP is this the same?

HI GUYS my 2002 320d makes whirstling noise from 1000 to 2000 revs, i was told its something to do with the turbo. Its an annoying whistle sound bit like a police siren from a distance.

could this be the same issue i have here?

Did you find the new boots you put in, seem to be squashed slightly? Well the highest one that attaches to the MAF really. B)

And good write up, well didnt read it but lots of words  Having done mine a while ago, it does drive much better now, well idles perfectly.

Chris mate yeah my boots did seem a little squashed but i think if you could be bothered to get all the angles of the boots spot on then you could probably get rid of this.

I tried everything, even took them all off again to re-adjust, but the second one seems slightly longer. But if everyone else has it, must be the spec of the boots has changed.

Good diy write up. Just done mine today. Couldnt of done it without your simple how to guide. So thanks. Oh and mine was in alot worse state than the one you showed in the pics.

The day after i did the diy i discovered that the throttle was sticking. Ive now fixed that problem, but now ive got a new problem and its abit like the original one. Every now and then the car will idle really irradically, to the point where it almost cuts out. I wander wether i need to reset the fault code thingy or not. Can anyone help?

In response to the unit that you say to remove and keep clean of dirt etc, that is the DISA valve, it opens just after 3k rpm for improved air intake to the engine

PLEASE CHECK IT when you have it out the car make sure the pin that holds the valve is nice and secure because if it fails and pops out it will be swallowed and your looking at a totally wrecked engine!

it is £127 and worth replacing if it is even if it is remotely wobbling.

that is all.

Sounds like you ICV (Idle Control Valve) could need cleaning or replacing, hit the search button to find out more on this.

With my infinate wisdom i now know what that thing is, ie the DISA valve. And as mentioned here it is well worth checking and replacing if its faulty, last thing you want is plasti in your engine, it wouldnt make for a smooth ride!

Great DIY Si. Was coming back from Newquay at the weekend and EML light came on just as I left Newquay. Although there has been no loss in power but my mate in another car noticed my car was making a whistling noise on the motorway. Got home, done a search and found your DIY, after checking the intake boot out there is about a 2cm split in it. Now got one in the Garage ready to fit. :)

Simon,

Brilliant guide!

This is my 1st post, I signed up as a result of hunting around for a similiar guide.

Planning to tackle this tomorrow, all parts ordered from BMW including all new clips etc... so hoping a couple of hours should do it.

Should I find any additional tips, I will post up.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your kind offer Simon. I ha a go at it this evening and have somehow manage to get the angle wrong. Can't get the simota filter to fit now lol. Going disassemble it again in the morning and have another bash. I did notice the new one is a tad bit shorter (lower elbow) but dont think that's a contributing factor.

Having difficulty sourcing a OEM airbox at the moment. Hate the simota as in my opinion it adds no value but got to make do until I can source a replacement.

If I get stuck I may take you up on your offer so long as you'll accept some beer tokens!

Think i've broken something now lol. Lost all acceleration and just can't get the Simota to fit back in properly. What a headache, tried again this morning but just not having it.

Think I've just amplified an underlying problem which was a loss in power when warm anyway so car's booked in Wednesday now to be seen to. Until then I'll have to potter around very sedatly.
