Dark_Knight
Had an operation on 28th January. When I came round the surgeon said "off work possibly 2 weeks". Went to the nurse last week for a check-up, mentioned I had to get a line for work to cover the 2nd week (this week). I was to have it picked up today as they said "the on-call doctor will have it done for you". Imagine my pleasant surprise when I got it today only to be signed off for..................................................... ...........................THE REST OF THE MONTH!!! George
I had an operation on the 12th of Jan and I was at my desk on the 14th. The consultant said three weeks off and I told him that I would love whatever it was that he was smoking... I wish I could stay home for three weeks... Jorge-
MED3s seem so easy to get from our surgery. Everyone with the slightest depression or stress seem to get 4w off.
simonlpearce
I dont tend to go to the Drs as they say exactly the same everytime you go...take these pills and come back if it doesnt get any better!!! And A+E is just as bad, i only go there with rugby injuries and as soon as you tell them its a rugby injury you go straight to the back of the line minimum 5 hour wait enen if your shoulder is dislocated! Jorge-
Should try go to your GP rather than A&E if possible... earns them money rather than costing the £143 or £83 I think that A&E charge your GP for use of their services.

I would but GP's tend not to be open on Saturdays and i only go to hospital if something is broken or could cause long term damage. For instance dislocated fingers are not something you would go in with, you just pop them back in yourself and dose up on pain killers

I work for the NHS checking costs, activity & invoicing (what an exciting life I lead!). GP's get a certain amount of money per patient they have registered with them. If the patient then has anything done to them, this then gets charged to the GP. If you feel ill, always make sure you go to your GP first as this does not cost anything extra. If you go to A&E this costs £70 just to walk through the door. If you then see a doctor or consultant this then costs an additional £120, this is before anything is even done to you! Imagine if this money was coming out of your pocket every time you went! Well actually it is, this is your NI contribution on your wage slip. People think the NHS is free, it's not and if people don't use it more responsibly then it will no longer exist, as it's running out of money! Then we will all have to get private health insurance, like the America! To get an ambulance to take you to hospital costs £1k every time! Anyway rant over! Jorge-
Yeah James, I am analysing our data on the Cube (guess you either work on that, or know about it?) at the moment. Its ridic the amount of A&E admissions during surgery opening hours for things as petty as broken fingers, or a scraped knee.
Jamesy Boy ACS3d
Maintainence cost of equipment; ambulance and on board equipment. Medicines, drugs, dressing required & used (some of these cost a small fortune!) Cost of paramedics, wages & on costs, training etc Cost of other personnel; call handlers, etc It all adds up to more than you think!! Very scary how much. simonlpearce
In that case then id welcome private health care plans, would cut the countries defecit of x billion in no time and would make the illegal scrote immigrants think twice about coming here for free health care. Plus my work are a US based company and all our US employees get it paid by work so i think they would stretch it to the UK if thats the way we went! Very poor coding from the majority of secondary care providers! Get fed up analysing A&E admissions for some practices, as its for stupid things which surgeries can handle but they close for lunch or half days!! Also the alcoholics which always present after pub closing times! Ahhhhhh Sounds like you do a similar job to me?!? Where do you work?
Jorge-
I am quite strongly moving towards private health care after seeing some costs. Like Prostate cancer treatment costs more than you will ever pay in NI. So do a lot of other treatments. I work at a GP Practice - Wellbrook Medical Centre. I am technically the Data Clerk, but I am slowly being handed more to do, and analysing our Cube data is my next big challege. Usual line of work is just admininstrative / IT support. If the NHS fails, it will be very bad for the country as a whole! A lot of deprived families will be unable to access the most basic medical care and the social care standards will fall dramatically. Jorge-
Ah right, I am currently sat here with a pile of papers labelled 'PBC Audits 10/11 for non electives with zero length of stay' f**k me. I want to hang myself right now. My eyes were opened though coming to work for the NHS, the costs of some of the things you take for granted is amazing, I really think people just need to be educated on some of this. I wasn't even aware that Practices were privately owned and were just funded by the NHS / PCTs, not run by the NHS.
Jamesy Boy ACS3d
http://www.darwins-theory-of-evolution.com/ Not really about evolution and it's not very much Natural Selection when financial issues such as losing your job, mean you can't afford basic medication such as Asthma inhalers or blood pressure tablets which could result in you dying. Just my opinion though.
Matt_330CI
I hate the NHS with a passion. What annoys me most is that I have Bupa private healthcare, but to get access to it, I need to see my NHS GP anyway. I wish there was a Bupa GP and Bupa A&E that I could just go to when I have a problem, pay my excess and be done with it, thus avoiding the NHS all together. And GP's, with their wages, should be open 7 days a week and later at night. Edited February 9, 2011 by Mikey
Jorge-
Matt states perfectly why the public need to be more educated by the way in which he worded that reply. Try working in a GP surgery for a week and see if you change what you think.
Jamesy Boy ACS3d
Completely agree GP practices should be open 24/7. Would provide a lot better level of care, access to services and reduce the financial implications of hospitals. Sorry Jorge - more overtime though Edited February 9, 2011 by Jamesy Boy ACS3d

You'd be stuck in a car accident and the regular ambulance service would have to ask you what your insurance status is and refuse to attend the emergency on the basis that you specified only private A&E, so you'd have to wait for the private ambulance to arrive, which might be further away. Don't hate the NHS. Rather hate the way the government changed the reporting and statistics so it's based on how quickly they've sent you away rather than how well they've treated you :/ I find the comment about the foreigners quite offensive. Shocked you even wrote that... Edited February 9, 2011 by Mikey
