Phantom Mark Posted October 24, 2008 Report Share Posted October 24, 2008 I got this little beaut from Flebay for 50 quid, its a generic fitment which meant some labour from me, first time iv'e done something like this and im certainly not a class welder ! Just thought I would share some pics and hopefully inspire other people to have a crack at doing stuff themselves Bought a 6ft length of 60mm exhuast pipe from the local and cut and shut to fit, retained all original mounts for simplicity, im no welder btw and had to tidy up my amatuer welding with the good ol grinder, looks ok I think ? Pleased with the backbox, sounds quite nice and actually I think the car might just be a tad quicker ? Will get my Gtech on the case and see how the quarter mile run goes and 0-60 etc. Had I done the job again I probably would have aimed to get the backbox a little more square, atm it sits slightly at an angle but still looks ok I think. To be honest I have never been a DTM fan but I like that looks clean. Its gotta sound better than the stock box also.. Your lucky you only have 1 pipe to connect it to I bloody have 2... Good job. Phantom Mark Posted November 5, 2008 Author Report Share Posted November 5, 2008 Thanks guys, I did wonder if I should go the whole hog with tool list and stage by stage, I didnt wanna come across as whittlin on tho, I think I more posted in the DIY section to just inspire people into taking on something they maybe would not normaly do. The welds came out ok, some bits of the old pigeon poo but to be honest some good work with the grinder and finishing it off makes it look 100x better and hides my amatuer welding skills, good thing is that everytime I use it I get a little better tho The overall angle and height for me are really starting to nagg me a little, idealy the zorst cutout needs raising in height a little and then the backbox straightening a little and raising, I think it would look 100x better if I can be arsed to do that. Still looks good though mate, and if it inspires just one person then your job is well done. I cut off the old hanger from the original backbox and welded it to the new one so I could retain standard mounts, thanks again for the positive comments I think I will let this one be as it is for now and treat it as a learning curve, im getting deep ambitions for a 330d atm, hence im only gonna start spending out on stuff I can transfer from this car to the next in the future I think............ Phantom Mark Posted November 6, 2008 Author Report Share Posted November 6, 2008 Hmm well......nothing like a petrol chav mobil for a start Louder derv yes I suppose, the main difference is a much bass'ey boom when you gun it, engine also seems to rev more freely from 3000 - 4000rpm, feels a touch quicker picking up the boost, I went past my mate the other night at 125mph whilst he was at 70mph, he said it thundered by sounding quite nice ( private runway of course ), was worth the 50 quid and some time and effort, but I certainly would not have been so happy if I had shelled out 300+ or something for the same sounds When your not gunning it its almost an unheard difference from standard, From the outside on tickover things sound a little more meaty with a nicer deeper burble but definately not something which will annoy your neighbours.....or indeed you if you go on a long trip, subtle but improved definately. wozza Posted January 10, 2009 Report Share Posted January 10, 2009 I'm impressed with your work. the weldin is lookin alright. U've inspired me to do a diy backbox myself an save a bit of cash. Being a very experienced welder i should be able to knock something up without too much trouble. Just gotta get hold a a decent backbox to modify.. I aint a fan of anythin too loud , tends to get anoyin driving round town. Might try an get hold of a secondhand box off the bay , somethin off a 6pot. make my 2.0L sound a bit better.
