For small cameras I recommend Casio or Canon. For large 'real' dSLR cameras, for me it's Canon all the way... but I do understand there are many Dirty Nikon fans out there :( Hehehe!

Certainly I'm all about the Canon. Are you after dSLR or just small and portable?

Cheers dicky...plenty where those came from!

Obviously with SLR's it isn't just the camera, its the lens too. You could spend thousands on an amazing camera but if you've got a poor lens whats the point? Unfortunately this is where SLR's become very expensive. In my case, the first two pics were taken with my everday lens - 17-85mm IS lens which has not had a pampered life! Been dropped plenty of times. The F1 pic was taken with a 300mm IS/L lens...was an incredible piece of kit!

I picked up a Canon 450D and it's awesome! I've art-directed photographers for years, yet know jack about cameras, so bought it (plus a load of books) to teach myself. Got an 85-200mm lens last week which proved handy for my girlfriend grabbing some shots of me drifting at the weekend!

The lens I want next is a Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS L Series, cheapest I've found that is £1225 :|

My Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS cost more than the camera body

If you're feeling really flush then there's the Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6L USM, retails at about £50,000-60,000 or you can hire it for 7 days for £3000

Any good to you? Not sure if that was the right lens you were looking for...looks like it has two the standard and the 55-200mm one...

I think my dad has a 350d laying about, is that a good starter camera?

Definately! Its still a very good camera. My advice is to download a few tutorials from the web and get snapping. The 350D is where canon introduced the EF-S lens range so it may be a relatively dated camera but there are loads of lenses availible for it. :(

Seems like canons a popular choice! Them pictures look great phil. Fancying the one of the wheel for the living room :)

Im just after something compact and good quality, and not in the thousands :o just love to be able to get some good quality snaps at meets etc :)

After looking around the various shops i liked the Sony T77.

Sony T77

What do i need to look for in compact cameras?

High optical zoom, around 10mp, memory card type & max capacity. Other features depend on what you are going to use it for. You might want a fast start up time if you are going to be shooting sports, face recognition if it will mostly be group photo's etc..

My Dad has one of these Jobbies , he paid over a grand for a lens not long back , this will sound a bit boring but he takes pics of trains and has trackside permit , he showed me this 1 particular picture that he took , he was about 15ft from a train doing 70mph, he took a pic and it looks like the train is parked up , its that clear ! I was gobsmacked !
