A 25-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after two men were killed in a crash on the M1 in Hertfordshire.

The men, aged 22 and 24 and from London, died in the collision, involving two BMWs, between junctions 5 and 4 near Watford, at about 02:40 GMT.

Two other men were taken to St Mary's Hospital, London, with "serious injuries" police said.

The four men in the second car were also injured and taken to hospital.

A police spokeswoman said their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening. The arrested man is from east London.

The accident resulted in the closure of five junctions of the motorway in both directions.

The southbound carriageway remained closed for several hours as the Highways Agency repaired the crash barrier. The motorway fully reopened at about 12:45 GMT.

An investigation is now under way into the cause of the crash.

Police said they were not releasing any further details about the people who died until formal identification had taken place. They are appealing for witnesses.

They are certainly not E46s and I don't really feel bad for them either, if they can't drive quickly safely then they deserve everything and more especially for putting other road users at risk.

Lets just hope that you never lose a family member in these circumstances.

Both those cars are saloons by the look of it - you can see the door recess line along the rear wheel arch on the second photo as well as the top of the left side front doorframe, and in the first photo you can clearly make out the B-pillar.

I know it's not conclusive but the wheels also look more like newer models, not E46.

Gutted for the families :(

Bear in mind the the roof has been cut off each car by the emergency services by the look of it, so wrecks always look worse after a roof chop. The interior of the first car looks relatively intact. Second car is utterly mullered though.

Grim :(

I got taken off the m3 4 years ago by cocks doing exactly what these d**ks were doing, only thing that saved my life was the fact i was in a tough as hell vw transporter, it looked more like a polo after. f**king d**ks driving mum and dads cars at warp speed. Go on a f**king track day!!!!

Sadly i have to agree with the majority here and have little sympathy due to the speed and way they were driving. I have sympathy for the passengers, they weren't in control, isn't it always the way though that one of the drivers survives. The cars look so smashed up that you can tell that was no way a even 75mph crunch.

Just glad that no other innocent cars were involved.

I think the big error these guys mate were driving so quick in the conditions. It was very icy in London where I am so to be doing that out in the sticks where the weather is even worse is crazy.

All the drivers needed was a bit of common sense ;)
