18" Wheels with 8.5J Front and 9.5J Rear... Question's

Recommended Posts

Morning chaps,

Few question's I currently have standard MV2's which I know are 8J and 8.5J respectivley.

I have 225 40 18 and 255 35 18 tyres on the MV2's at present.

My question's are I am looking at new wheels I have standard suspension, so is it ok to run a wheel 8.5J Front and 9.5J Rear? (What ET would be best)

Considering my standard rears are 8.5J but this (with a potential new set I have been offered) would be on the front and 9.5 on the rear!? Don't want to have random fitting wide wheels that make the car drive cr@p you see.

Also will my standard (225 40 18 & 255 35 18) tyres go on these new 8.5J Front and 9.5J Rear ok without a 'stretch'?

Merci :D

Tyres wont fit properly 'without stretch' as you put it, but they will go on.

8.5 and 9.5 is fine. The front offset isn't usually much of an issue unless its something stupid, where the rear you will want something around ET40 to be sure of fitment. You might also want to consider a very slight stretch to be sure of no rubbing when fully loaded.

Thanks Simon.

What would be the ideal tyre size for a 8.5J Front and 9.5J Rear be?

I really just wanted to swap my tyres over from my MV2's as they are P-Zero's and have loads of life in them, but dont really fancy the stretch look, a little is ok but nothing stupid :(

255's will fit on 9.5J nicely..

Not sure about you but i've always thought 255's on 8.5J is a little "baloony" considering the sidewalls on the fronts look so good. Fitting 255's on 9.5J will make them look like the fronts. The stretch will be hardly anything. :)

Here's a pic:

It'll go from this:

Barely..

Remember that the 8.5J front and 9.5J rear is a very common setup. The important thing to concentrate on is the offset. Fronts can go as low as high 20's IIRC. Rear - you don't want anything lower than 40 on a 9.5J.

Well the lower the offset the more the wheel sticks out (and generally accepted to look better).

Front ET35 is fine.

Rear ET40 should be ok. ET45 should fit no problems at all BUT if the wheel has spokes the shape wont be as "concave".

Have a look at the link Devil 666 posted above - it'll give you a good idea on what the difference will be.

FYI I think OEM MV2's are ET50.

Cheers momo.

The wheels in question are CSL type ones, so I would like the rear to be as concave as possible to be honest without fouling anything.

Would the issue with the et40's (if they rubbed on something) be that they were too close to the outer arch lip?

Thansk for you help mate :)

I run standard suspension and dont have any plans to lower it to be honest, so hopefully be ok.

I need to drive over some pretty huge speedbumps on a daily, and some fairly random inclines with the car quite well loaded.

My specs are as follows and I don't have any problems:

Fronts: 8j ET38 + 5mm Spacer

Rears: 9j ET42 (will add 5mm spacer once rolled arches)

Tyres are 215/40.

When I lowered it on the MV2s the front tyres were catching the coilover springs, good job I only had to drive back from the tyre shop before fitting my new wheels.

Coilovers are JOM with about 1" left on the front and back adjusters with the helpers in.

Yes mate. Stretch is almost non existent on the front, but the back is more noticeable.

Link in a trip to see this Eonon unit to check the wheels and fitment out if you want.

Will do mate, next week sometime? When are you free.

Choice 2 front would poke out 6mm more than choice 1.

Rear would be the same 0,4mm difference.

If you buy wheels with higer ETs thats no problem cos U can use spacers always.

If you buy with low ETs you need to do more than just a spacers.Arch rolling, negativ camber, extrem stretch tyres etc etc....

Hi guys, can i put these wheels on an e46 coupe with an eibach pro kit with a 25mm lowering ?

front: R18 8J ET34 225/40
rear: R18 9J ET 38 255/35

https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.php?width=255&aspect=35&diameter=18&wheelwidth=8.5&offset=50&width2=255&aspect2=35&wheel_size=18&wheel_width=9&offset2=38

Might be close. Lowering will tuck the top of the wheel into the arch a little more than normal, but it's an 18mm difference so it could be close. You might have to fit 245 wide rear tyres to be sure.
