Noise from fuel tank? 4-6 weeks to swell in to place. See link

Recommended Posts

I have an awful thumping sound coming from the rear off side of my 330cd. The noise occurs when driving over uneven road and bumps. Noise will occur when wheel is rebounding and shock is extending. I have bilstein pro kit, new meylee top mounts, nothing loose in boot. car has just had massively cracked rear end from subframe mount points failing. BMW put the noise down to failed rear shock and or top mount. Both top mount and shock has been replaced since.

I found this and am wondering if this is my problem.

http://workshop-manuals.com/bmw/3_series_e46/318i_n42_sal/1_service_information/33__rear_axle/2_si__snapping_knocking_and_smacking_noises_from_the_rear_of_the_vehicle_(rear_axle_f/

As my fuel tank is usually empty to quarter full, it may well be rattling around in its mounting strap. I will change the rubber mounts on the strap and keep the tank full for 4-6 weeks and see what happens..

Has anyone else had this problem?

Cheers

lots of people say about Meyle top mounts not being that good, lots report about a thud sounding like it has gone bad, try getting lemfoder top mounts that should cure it!

Thanks but the lemforder ones are the same as oem. They prolapse (literally the rubber comes out the metal mount) with the bilsteins.. Too soft

I don't see much movement in the top mount when ive been in the boot with someone else driving. I really dont think these are the problem.

Baffled..

It really rattles over bumpy road

At the price of them and these ease to fit them, you'll be surprised, do a search on meyle top mounts and you'll see so many people saying them same as you " new top mounts but got banging noise what could it be??" then they'll dismiss whats being told to them until they dig around spend more money and then change them and hey presto no more banging. But hey it's your car, your money, your time

I had meyle rear top mounts and after a very short time they began knocking. They have a design fault which means they are crap! Get rid of them and get some lemforder ones, what I did and no knocking!

Ha :) yea thats me! You may well be right..

Ive got brand new maylee top mounts. Because of the harder suspension, the lemforder ones pop out. I will get the bimmertune mounts and see what happens..

Google 'prolapse' that is what happens to new lemforder mounts the day after I put them in..

Im sure now the answer is these

http://www.powerflexsuspensionbushes.co.uk/powerflex-bmw-e46-pfr5-5630-10-rear-shock-top-mount-bracket-and-bush-10mm-7150-p.asp

I'll let you knkw what happens..

The noise might be coming from within the damper because the mount is not holding the top rigid enough? That would explain why I've blown 2 dampers in 2 years on that side but Bilsteins shouldn't fail like that..

I just fitted the powerflex top mounts and the noise is still there.. Like i thought.. Its NOT the top mounts. The meyle were fine. took a chance and wasted 70 quid.

Found the problem.. 2 of the 3 bolts holding rtab were loose. Thanks wheel alignment man! Reallt silly of me not to spot that but i trusted he done a good job.

I'll go back and get them to re check the alignment.

Thanks all

Sorry mate but there is always an exception to every rule if you know what I mean, But good news on finding the problem, I hope you get them to pay for the tracking, and why not ask them for a donations towards the parts you bought!
