Eltelturbo
I have an awful thumping sound coming from the rear off side of my 330cd. The noise occurs when driving over uneven road and bumps. Noise will occur when wheel is rebounding and shock is extending. I have bilstein pro kit, new meylee top mounts, nothing loose in boot. car has just had massively cracked rear end from subframe mount points failing. BMW put the noise down to failed rear shock and or top mount. Both top mount and shock has been replaced since. I found this and am wondering if this is my problem. http://workshop-manuals.com/bmw/3_series_e46/318i_n42_sal/1_service_information/33__rear_axle/2_si__snapping_knocking_and_smacking_noises_from_the_rear_of_the_vehicle_(rear_axle_f/ As my fuel tank is usually empty to quarter full, it may well be rattling around in its mounting strap. I will change the rubber mounts on the strap and keep the tank full for 4-6 weeks and see what happens.. Has anyone else had this problem? Tymm
lots of people say about Meyle top mounts not being that good, lots report about a thud sounding like it has gone bad, try getting lemfoder top mounts that should cure it!
Eltelturbo
Thanks but the lemforder ones are the same as oem. They prolapse (literally the rubber comes out the metal mount) with the bilsteins.. Too soft I don't see much movement in the top mount when ive been in the boot with someone else driving. I really dont think these are the problem. Baffled.. It really rattles over bumpy road
Larry D
You have meyle top mounts though yes? I had the same problem, meyle top mounts. I'd rather change the top mounts every, what, 2-3 years than listen to it. Tymm

But hey it's your car, your money, your time StuBeeDoo
Paddybrown23
I had meyle rear top mounts and after a very short time they began knocking. They have a design fault which means they are crap! Get rid of them and get some lemforder ones, what I did and no knocking!

I will get the bimmertune mounts and see what happens.. Tymm

Eltelturbo
Google 'prolapse' that is what happens to new lemforder mounts the day after I put them in.. Im sure now the answer is these http://www.powerflexsuspensionbushes.co.uk/powerflex-bmw-e46-pfr5-5630-10-rear-shock-top-mount-bracket-and-bush-10mm-7150-p.asp I'll let you knkw what happens.. The noise might be coming from within the damper because the mount is not holding the top rigid enough? That would explain why I've blown 2 dampers in 2 years on that side but Bilsteins shouldn't fail like that..
