Todd1983
If position the filter further forward and lower then would massively reduce heat soak as wouldn't be directly over exhaust manifold and turbo.....hmmm gonna look when home lol Edited April 1, 2015 by Todd1983 chunky899
The_Judge_
so just minor damage on that pipe then (!)
Todd1983
Do you think the Air box is heat resistant? Or that all major tuned cars run closed air boxes? Yes there will be more heat soak, but the extra air flow will out weigh this combined with fmic to bring IAT down. I'll even post a picture when I'm in my yard of one of the engines that I look after that is built by probably the best industrial Diesel engine manufacturer going that is supplied with an open air filter, and that's on a static engine where engine bay temps are much higher than on a car. It's the same principle as running an induction kit Here's that picture I promised, I'm sure cummins know what they're doing fitting an open filter to their qsl9's (9ltr straight 6) chunky899
Tewkes
I'm not saying open air is bad? I'm just stating that over the turbo and exhaust etc at the back of the engine it will absorb some more heat, than usual. That picture looks like it's on the front of a block? Todd1983
It is to the left of the manifold towards rear of the engine. But as said, engine bay temps are still higher as a static engine Vas
TriggerFish
as a static engine It's really hard to work on engines when they keep running around, I find! My concern with the open air filter would be: how well secured is it? I know they're a tight fit, but some cable ties or something to keep it in place would put my mind at rest, personally. Todd1983
Lol, ment they don't move along getting airflow like a car. It's an engine in a box. When I do my induction kit, I will make a heatshield to sit beneath the filter, and brace it so can't move. Mr Xen

chunky899
Right, after spending a lot of time swearing at the car, then researching what could be the issue. i have come to think that its the two pressure solenoids n the valve body. but i need to know if there's a UK place i can get them from... I can only see US one's :/ I really only need 2 of the 5 but if i have to get the lot it's fine. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5L40E-Transmission-Solenoid-Kit-GM-BMW-Shift-TCC-EPC-NEW-1999-2003-99166-/190835980359?hash=item2c6eb5f847 @Todd1983 any ideas? lol Edited April 12, 2015 by chunky899

chunky899
So... The car went into specialist today, getting it back tomorrow a new gearbox and torque converter, and a big lump of monies later....it'll be healthy again. Now don't all think it's failed because of the turbo because I'm sure that's not the issue. The box was on 160,000 miles and a hard life. The gearboxes are only good for 100,000 from what I've seen so It's been waiting to fail. I guess me driving like a c**k since I got it has hasn't helped. ....Phone.....
