rasa
i thought therewas a guide on here wher you dont need to drain coolant(only a little) which you catch in a container and replace when finished Edited November 14, 2014 by rasa
X-Man
If the coolant hasn't been done in the last 2 years then it's worth draining the lot for the £20 or so it will cost

vmlopes
Have read different places quoting 7lts and 9lts coolant for this model, can anyone confirm?
B0B
Have read different places quoting 7lts and 9lts coolant for this model, can anyone confirm? I did mine the last year, complete change (including taking out the engine block drain plug) was 8 litres. I bought 4.5 litres of BMW coolant that you mix 50/50 with water and I had about a litre left.

X-Man
Just remember to catch the coolant and if you spill any on the ground, wash it away with plenty of water. Coolant is harmful to animals (and us to an extent) and as it smells sweet they will lick it.... CharlE46

Silver Streek
Bear one thing in mind when you do this, it makes the difference between a nice straight forward to job so a swearing PITA job. If you have the later type of EGR pipe set up that is water cooled you need to move the egr pipe to get enough access to the thermostat housing. Don't do what I did and remove the EGR pipe from the exhaust manifold. Only two bolts but BOY are they a PITA to put back in. There is NO hand room at all the screw the bolts in. If you drop the bolt like I did it disappears down into the bowels of the engine so you will end up taking the bottom metal engine plate off the bottom of the car. What I didn't realise was that if you loosen the two bolts a little the pipe can turn out of the way as the flange is not welded to the pipe it just compresses the joint onto the exhaust manifold. Hope that makes sense, I wish someone would have told me that before I did mine, a 30 min job turned into a two hour swearing session PS The red coolant is the wrong stuff for our engines it eats away at the block and seals, you should be using the old blue glycol based stuff like Bluecol or the like. Just drain the rad and refill with new, it should be done periodically anyway and is not expensive. The_Judge_
This may be helpful, is for a 330d but I don't think there is a big difference: http://www.bimmerforums.co.uk/forum/f91/e46-330d-thermostat-ac-water-pump-drive-belt-replacement-t103035/ I did something similar here: http://www.e46zone.com/forum/topic/54396-egr-delete-diy/ Edited November 25, 2014 by The_judge aka Suf
