Have read different places quoting 7lts and 9lts coolant for this model, can anyone confirm?

I did mine the last year, complete change (including taking out the engine block drain plug) was 8 litres.

I bought 4.5 litres of BMW coolant that you mix 50/50 with water and I had about a litre left.

Is it really that easy? My needle sits half way between blue and dead centre?..I take it fuel economy will be better if I change it?...

Bear one thing in mind when you do this, it makes the difference between a nice straight forward to job so a swearing PITA job. If you have the later type of EGR pipe set up that is water cooled you need to move the egr pipe to get enough access to the thermostat housing. Don't do what I did and remove the EGR pipe from the exhaust manifold. Only two bolts but BOY are they a PITA to put back in. There is NO hand room at all the screw the bolts in. If you drop the bolt like I did it disappears down into the bowels of the engine so you will end up taking the bottom metal engine plate off the bottom of the car.

What I didn't realise was that if you loosen the two bolts a little the pipe can turn out of the way as the flange is not welded to the pipe it just compresses the joint onto the exhaust manifold.

Hope that makes sense, I wish someone would have told me that before I did mine, a 30 min job turned into a two hour swearing session ;)

PS The red coolant is the wrong stuff for our engines it eats away at the block and seals, you should be using the old blue glycol based stuff like Bluecol or the like. Just drain the rad and refill with new, it should be done periodically anyway and is not expensive.

This may be helpful, is for a 330d but I don't think there is a big difference:

I did something similar here:
