dooge
Hi all, I am commuting at least 34 miles a day at the moment and its 80% B roads whereby I generally get stuck behind someone doing half the speed limit. Ive been looking at remaps but want the most power and torque out of the car I can get without going too far. A local garage has offered a generic remap and EGR delete for very little money however I was really eyeing up a custom map which would cost me 3 times as much. I dont have anything particularly fancy done to my car (decat, EGR delete, Pipercross filter, swirl flaps removed) What would a custom map give me over a generic remap? The_Judge_
If you have swirl flaps on your car, then remove these first before doing anything else! Inadvertently I've had both types of remap done. Both cost me about the same, 250 quid. The generic one felt great, but was too powerful and was unusable and threw errors on the dash, though the bloke that did it was very friendly and service was great. The "custom" one doesn't feel as exciting, but still good, doesnt give any problems or cause dash warning lights and car genuinely had about 30hp more than new. The service at the garage was sh8t though .... Oh, you may also just notice a big difference by cleaning your EGR valve and spraying EGR3 into the manifold as well if you are willing to try. Cheap fixes, just a bit of elbow grease. Edited May 10, 2015 by The_judge aka Suf Mr Xen
rasa
if you get a map, the normal maps, ie ones that claim the power, are fine,as long as the mapper has looked at all variants on your car,ie is fuel pump ok,injectors, turbo, etc, then they can put map on your car and you can go drive it,if you want it a little different, then he can change it,the only difference with a rolling road one is,you will know what powere to wheels, flywheel etc,do a bit of home work on the kit the mapper has,i did when i bought mine, they guy had the alien tech(k-tag) software, same as dealers of german cars use, also showed me info of the same car he had done to others,i drove it,then he tweaked it oince, all was good, that was 18 month ago
dooge
Cheers for the replies gents, the main reason for asking was I always find low down torque to be lacking and its not until 2.5k RPM that it really kicks in properly. If a decent generic map will put power down throughout the rev range brilliant but am I right in saying a custom map will 'tune' the ECU to pull stronger lower down? autosri
It will make no real difference really unless you have mods that waren't a custom map
StuBeeDoo
It will make no real difference really unless you have mods that warrant a custom map My take on it is something similar to ^^^ this. Generic maps will be fine if the engine is standard, once you start adding mods (EGR delete, cat delete, larger intercooler, etc, etc) the fuelling requirement will alter. Then you need to go into custom mapping.
dooge
Cheers gents, kind of answers my questions. Im sure certain mods will help regardless of type of map, like a decat is just helping exhaust gases flow and an EGR delete (short of coding out the EGR from the ECU so it doesn't produce a fault) again it just aids air flow, unless Im wrong? I think all my mods will not require anything custom so next question is who is recommended for a remap in the southwest? Billz
Not really in the southwest but I got mines done from Mike@MoTech in Northamptonshire an amazing job and a sound guy too. Got a EGR delete through the ECU as well hugh difference the car feels completely different worth every penny with no lights on dash either had it done around 6 months now best mod you can do! Jard
Sorry I don't want to hijack the thread, but I'm also looking into this.. I looked at CNL and emaps (same software so I'm told) and guessing these are just generic maps? (unsure on cost) I have also looked into MSD (motorsport developments) custom/live mapping options £250-500 As above, mine is having the alhard egr pipe & front decat (204bhp manual), but thought a custom rolling road map would be better in general as being custom, they can tweak and ajdust the power/torque curves to suite the car and drivers driving style. Ive looked at a few 'remappers' that cover my area and it is hard to judge the quality of work. Ive pretty much settled on Bevo tuning based in Plymouth just because its local. Colin at CNL gets rave reviews from tons of people on here but dont want to drive miles to get it remapped just in case there is a problem.
