Coolant

Recommended Posts

I've always used BMW stuff in my E46.

For the E30, I've got some Comma Xstream g48 (I think), that's meant to be compatible with the BMW stuff, and is a fraction of the price. I'd check it's compatible with the e46 coolant, but I think it's all interchangeable.

Thanks for that.

The comma G48 stuff is about £30, is the BMW stuff a lot more than that?

Looking online I'll need about 9 litres.

I want to say £7.50 or £15 for a 1.5l bottle. I can't remember exactly, but it was a lot more than the Comma stuff by the time you've got the concentration correct.

OK mate, thanks for that I'll give BMW a bell at lunch. Figure I'm best getting it sorted sooner rather than later.

The Comma G48 stuff I think is the same as BMW use, they just charge you a shed load more for it.

Basically whatever you use has to be glycol based not the acidic OAT stuff that's usually coloured red. Glycol based stuff is generally blue.

I bought a 5 litre tub of glycol based coolant from ECP when I was picking up and new rad for mine last week, it was about £16 or £19 for 5 litres of concentrate. Was the right spec for E46.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I've ordered BMW stuff, they gave me trade price so it cost just shy of £32 for 4.5l plus a washer for the engine block drain plug washer.

Only about £8 more than the comma stuff.

Worryingly I don't think my car has any coolant in it - its clear and looks like water, plus the tester said its only good down to -7!
