INPA Working :D Selective Mass Adjustment :(

Recommended Posts

So, finaly got INPA so was running through it on my 330d. I have had white smoke, slight rough idle and a smell of unburnt diesel on cold from cold startups since owning it. This I have put down to 1 or more leaking injectors. The car runs fine and idles smoothly after about 1 minute of running.

So, when I ran the Selective Mass Adjustment test (this was with the engine completely cold after over night) in INPA I got a reading of around 0 for cylinders 2 to 5 but cylinder 1 read -3 and cylinder 6 read 5.60.

Am I right in thinking this means one injector is under performing and the other one is adjusting for it?

What would people suggest I do please?

Below is the readout after a 10 mile run:

Its harder to know what is to blame. I have similar issues on my 330cd, smoke on startup, especially when cold and rough idle for 15-30 seconds. Economy is ok, could be better though and car feels a bit flat.

Some of the starting issue on mine I put down to glowplugs and possibly the glowplug relay. I doubt the glowplugs have been changed and despite it not really needing glowplugs to start I read somewhere that they are used for help with warming the chambers to aid combustion when the car is cold, which I suspect is why mine feels worse when cold compared to when its up to temp.

When I ran mine through selective mass adjustment my 3rd cylinder was running around -1.66 on idle. This was while warm. The rest were just slightly over +, such as 0.30. From what I understand 0 should be a base and the injectors compensate for others that are out.

With such a wide range of injector values on yours I would start with one of the injectors showing an extreme value, such as number 1. You may find after that one is rebuilt, the others may even out as the ecu compensates. Clearly 5 and 6 are compensating for the other 4 or vice versus. The other option is getting all 6 done but I cant afford to do this so 1 at a time is the easiest way.

I suspect that the injectors in minus figures are held back by the ECU because somehow the car knows there is an issue and plus figures are over fuelling to keep the engine running smoothly, though that is just guesswork by me.

Thanks. Yeah, i thought that between 1 and 6, one of those was under performing and the other was compensating as at idle, both were the furthest out of tolerance. And, i think, they both fire at the same time being opposite cylinders.

I could be completely wrong though.

I've been running Millers Ecomax for about 10 tanks now and wondered if I run some more dedicated injector cleaner through it if that would make any difference?

Did you get anywhere with this Bamse? I still have an issue with one of my injectors and its gradually getting worse (from -1.30ish in January to -1.85ish now) but I have had a variety of problems to sort that have been a bit more pressing. Tempted to splash some cash to get it sorted before winter.

I've been running Millers since and the smoking is a lot better. The injectors still have the same values so I'm assuming they are not getting any worse.

Interesting to know Bamse, I only ever use fancy diesel (Normally Texaco Supreme or Esso Synergy) so I expected it to get better but no joy. I am wondering if a Terraclean is worth doing, have you tried one Suf?

I've had terraclean, it didn't fix my injectors, I think when the injectors go, they just go ...

However, I have remarkably high Torque - I think that must be down to Terraclean.

I have a spare set of injectors (which according to @TriggerFish are crap) but if you feel the need to try a different injector we can work something out.

Yeh, I didnt think it would fix it. Had a load of other error messages on INPA last night possibly related to the actuator box on the turbo. One thing after another with this car!!

Thanks Suf, I may do but you have the 184 don't you? Only one is really low, cylinder 4 is a little high so I think its compensating. On idle, what values should they be? Should it be zero or should there be a positive value?
