Sticky Exterior Door Handle Fix

Recommended Posts

First post. I love these forums, have done the golf tee exhaust mod and cleaned my headlights trick.

BE CAREFUL!!! DO NOT TURN THE ALLEN KEY CLOCKWISE TO TIGHTEN. I just have an it's completely screwed my lock and/or handle mechanism somehow. I turned it back the other way but the door shut but will not open.

Can anyone help as I don't know what this has done to my car! I'm about to cry, and take it to a mechanic tomorrow

Paint it orange, put a big 01 on the doors and climb in through the window :)

Or as Bungers said, see if it will open from the handle on the inside to gain access to the lock mechanism.

I managed to get the door open with one hell of a pull. I've sprayed WD40 inside the hole that had the grub screw in, and it closes ok but opens with a really hard tug. I've re-read all the posts relating to this and want to try and fix this. I'm thinking of tightening the allen key (drivers door) anticlockwise and hope for the best. What does this screw do anyway? I tightened it really hard clockwise (against what the video showed) - can this break something?

If it wasn't me only car and sole transport to work I'd be tempted to paint it orange...

Glad I found this post, my drivers door was hard to open, I sprayed WD40 into all of the accessible mechanisms the other day and it is much better.

But if the problem comes back I'd be tempted to have a go at these DIY tips.....carefully though

I'm one of the ones who has fooked the door! :(

The door won't open from the exterior handle, but luckily still opens with the interior one.

I only turned it a fraction. I heard a crack and now the screw just spins freely both ways and doesn't seen to bite.

Does anyone know of a fix for this?

I've looked on e46 fanatics and some people say they had to buy a hole new mechanism??? Surely I can't have caused about £200 quids worth of damage by turning a screw!

If anyone has a solution I would be very grateful.

Cheers

Joe

I tried this on mine earlier. Drivers door is now perfect, but I accidentally loosened the passenger side a bit too much and the screw thing fell in the bloody door. Now I can't open the door from the outside, but the inside is perfectly fine. Can I just replace that screw or do i have to rip the door apart to fix it? Really hoping I can just chuck another one on there...

I need to sort this! I'm going to try a bit of WD40 first then the grub screw. Its a bit conflicting throughout the thread, are the drivers and passengers side different threads?! I.e. ones normal, the other is reverse - requiring a different direction to tighten?

I tried all the 'fixes' for my passenger door. The grub screw thing didn't make any difference.

The handle on the outside would pull out all the way but wouldn't release the door, just as if it was locked.

In the end I took the handle off from the outside and grabbed the bit of metel the handle pulls with a big pair of bent end pliers. Bent the thing back a little (towards in side of car) and its been perfect ever since. :punk:

I should point out this is only possible on the older pull-out type handles, not the later spec pull-up handles. My Imola had hard to open doors until I took the door cards and vapour barrier off and cleaned / greased the door opening mechanism, the bit right up inside the door that the outside handle operates/moves, not the latch. Made a massive difference, both my doors open with ease now. Its all in my build thread anyway.

fix was for older handle version, not later spec like my current E46 has

I tried this on saturday but the bolts were already tight? yet my doors are very stiff to open? Any ideas?

Yeah I found the same, which is why I was asking about reverse threads a few posts back. Anyone know the answer?
