gibbo
Hey guys Im new to e46's, and this site. just recently bought one, 2003, 316i with the n42 engine I think. Having been an e30 fan for the last 14 years I was let down badly with my 325i cab, I decided to move on to the e46. I thought the newer model would mean no problems, but yet again, BMW's have let me down, but I still love them. It happens when I start to give it some throttle, gentle throttle seems worse, the car starts to miss, if I could best describe it, its almost like an automatic, when you give it throttle and you get the revs changing as its going through gears, (mine is a manual)or maybe its like its hicuping. I'm not sure if its a common problem, but have found alsorts here on the web, from its normal because of not having a throttle cable but electronic, to going to the dealer to get a software update. it has a full service history, but not a full stealer history, more so local garages. Any help much appreciated..
///Marty
There is a throttle reset procudure you can do yourself on here somewhere, might be worth a try? http://www.e46zone.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=4012
gibbo
There is a throttle reset procudure you can do yourself on here somewhere, might be worth a try? A throttle reset? sounds a good starting point, any idea how to search on here for it? Forgot to say earlier, the car has had new coil pack recently, I guess the previous owner had the same problem, but neglected to tell me.

Sorry, i didn't add the link straight away as i had to go search for it myself, anyway to search something just select the SEARCH button at the top right hand corner of the page, type in what you are looking for and get browsing. If you know who wrote a particular comment or post then you can also use advanced search to narrow down your options.
gibbo
Done the reset on the drive, one thing i have noticed straight away is the tick over is better, before it would idle at about 650 rpm, now its up in the correct region of 750. going to give it blast up the road in ten minutes, see if its worked.. gibbo
Gutted, its still the same. Another way to describe it, its almost like when your about to run out of fuel, and the car starts to miss.
Mikey
Best getting it in for a diagnostic check. Try an independent BMW garage rather than a stealer as it'll be a lot cheaper. At least it will give you piece of mind tracking exactly what the problem is.

gibbo
Latest update. Had diagnostics done today, no faults recorded, but on further investigation reading the data it was noticed that the lambda sensor seems to not show signs of any fluctuation in readings, so signs are its knackered. Chappy that done the test is going to have a look at it next week. Any ideas how much a new sensor will cost? also, which make to go for? stealer's, or after market... mit
Go for OEM when it comes to stuff like sensors. Aftermarket ones tend not to be as reliable/last as long.
gibbo
Update again.. After having the Lambda sensors checked to it turns out both are knackered, what are the chances of that! Both were tested and both show no voltage or fluctuation changes. Is it common for both to be faulty? or chances are one could have been faulty for a long time, and the other died more recent..
