Jacko95
Hello everyone, I'm having an issue with steering wheel wobble on my E46 330ci facelift. Before you ask, I've already changed the first 10 things that pop into your head, this is something more. The symptoms are a slight left and right wobble fed directly through the steering wheel when travelling at speeds above 60-65mph, on all road surfaces whether recently resurfaced tarmac or older concrete roads. Under 60mph it is not noticable. It's only feedback through the steering wheel, there's no vibrations from the undercarriage or seats shaking etc. I've had the prop guibo's checked etc and had no complaints of a vibration from passengers. I've had the car nearly 2 years. The issue arose maybe a year ago and I've been progressively changing parts (where pennies permit) to find the culprit. No single part changed; or single incident (such as hitting a pothole); has caused the symptoms immediately, it just became more and more noticable and now I'm doing more motorway journies it's much more apparent. Beginning June 2019, this is the list of parts replaced and services carried out in chronological order, all parts brand new unless otherwise specified. Some parts were changed due to just being old or I had easy access for example I refurbed the anti roll bars front and back and changed the bushes whilst there, mentioned anyway to assist with ruling out possibilities. The car is not categorised and shows no signs of previous accident damage. It has not been involved in any accidents under my ownership. 30mm spacers on the front wheels and 15mm on the rear, with or without the spacers the symptoms do not worsen or improve. I expect the spacers may exaggerate the underlying issue however. MV2 alloys staggered (OEM) refurbished, no cracks and none out-of-round Dunlop Sportmax RT2 on all 4 corners, new valves and balanced perfectly (I witness it as spot on) Front lollipop bushes changed for powerflex purple series Swapped prev owners coilovers to 2nd hand OEM shocks and springs in good nick + brand new top mounts. NSF/OSF OEM ARB Droplinks to match OEM struts NSR/OSR OEM ARB Droplinks to match fronts NSF/OSF Lower wishbone arms (with balljoints pre-pressed) Inner and outer tie rod ends Steering column rubber guibo replaced with a billet aluminium solid coupler Remanufactured/rebuilt OEM steering rack Power steering pump Full power steering fluid drain and refill NSR/OSR adjustable camber control arms 4 Wheel computerised alignment (I witness it as spot on) NSF/OSF brake calipers NSF/OSF brembo brake discs and brake pads NSF/OSF meyle wheel bearings Does anyone have any ideas or previous experience on what might be causing the issue? dunk1
Wheel balance occurs around this speed, maybe go somewhere else and get the balance checked I've done this in the past, get them to check them as they come off the car to see what the machine says they are now
kirkynut
The one thing you've not listed but I struggle to think you've not done as you clearly have knowledge about cars is the tracking. I had Hunter 4 wheel alignment done after I changed my front arms and bushes and it made a big difference. Other than that, I read you've replaced the guibo on the steering column but is there a universal joint on the steering shaft to the rack to change the angle? I don't know without looking up diagrams on RealOEM and I'm not on my computer for that at the moment. Kirkynut
